Advanced scientific methods make it possible to test cosmetics without the need of animal subjects. Examples of non-animal cosmetic testing include:
In-vitro Testing
- “Organs on chips” have been created containing human cells grown in a structure to mimic the structure and function of human organs and organ systems. This method replaces the use of animal models and is more closely related to humans.
- Cell-based tests and tissue models may be used in order to replace the use of guinea pigs or mice, as seen in the Guinea Pig Maximization Test. These models can assess the safety of cosmetics and chemical ingredients as they mimic traits of human skin.
- Human blood tests may also be used to detect contaminants in ingredients, new chemical compounds and products.
Computer (in silica) Modeling
- Computer models can be used to mimic human biology and predict how humans will react to substances. Computer-based techniques can effectively replace animal testing as they provide accurate predictions.
