In the first of a series of guest posts from the Arms and the Man<\/em><\/a> company, second year BFA Acting Candidate Ryan Warden<\/strong> weighs in on the question “Is theatre dead?”:<\/p>\n

Depending on what circles you\u2019re in the answer will invariably vary. If you\u2019re reading this your answer is probably \u201cno\u201d, but for the vast majority of the population, theatre is just a class they took in high school.<\/p>\n

Even many in the theatre community<\/a> are heralding the death of theatre due to the recent cuts<\/a> in arts spending. Despite the recent resurgence in arts and culture awareness during the Olympic games, it doesn\u2019t look like things are going to get any better. In fact, yesterday\u2019s budget lockup at the BC Legislature<\/a> revealed that arts spending will continue to drop to record lows.<\/p>\n

So, for those of us who are investing years of our lives in theatre school<\/a>, not to mention the years after paying off student loans, it begs the question, \u201cAre you nuts?\u201d Well the simple answer is \u201cyes\u201d and to be honest it\u2019s a question I ask myself far too frequently.<\/p>\n

However, all I have to do is look over the past couple years that I\u2019ve been in UBC\u2019s BFA Acting program<\/a> and it\u2019s plain to see that it would be nuts NOT to do this. It\u2019s way too much fun! And I\u2019ve achieved an awareness of myself and those around me in a way I never thought possible. I\u2019ve managed to break out of my skull and inhabit my body as a whole, fully-functioning person, which is quite a feat in today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n

As social interactions and relationships become increasingly web-based, theatre is one of the last strongholds of good old fashioned human connection in its truest form. So those of us<\/a> here in the Alamo<\/a> might be committing suicide, but we\u2019ll fight to the death nonetheless.<\/p>\n
