Looking back on the day, and the food I ate, I can’t fairly say that I am a huge consumer of oil. But then I look more at what goes into all of my food, the refinement, the transport, the bottling, it all adds up. Not a single thing that I consumed all day contained a food product that was tainted by oil one way or another.
A slight note that I would like to add is on the pepper-nuts from my home country. Richard Manning argues about Kennan and how he said in a memo that the richer group of the population is just that through their possession of food. Throughout history this is evident, primarily with the Spice Islands in Indonesia. Clove, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and many more spices were only found in certain areas of Indonesia in the 1600’s, when settlers first went to Indonesia to colonize. This made for them to be able to create a monopoly on these prices, increasing their wealth tenfold. The peculiar thing is though that two of the main ingredients of this age-old snack are ones that more readily available to the Dutch.
