Reflecting on the Day

Looking back on the day, and the food I ate, I can’t fairly say that I am a huge consumer of oil. But then I look more at what goes into all of my food, the refinement, the transport, the bottling, it all adds up. Not a single thing that I consumed all day contained a food product that was tainted by oil one way or another.

A slight note that I would like to add is on the pepper-nuts from my home country. Richard Manning argues about Kennan and how he said in a memo that the richer group of the population is just that through their possession of food. Throughout history this is evident, primarily with the Spice Islands in Indonesia. Clove, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and many more spices were only found in certain areas of Indonesia in the 1600’s, when settlers first went to Indonesia to colonize. This made for them to be able to create a monopoly on these prices, increasing their wealth tenfold. The peculiar thing is though that two of the main ingredients of this age-old snack are ones that more readily available to the Dutch.

Midnight Munchies

Bugger. I wonder how long I can keep this up, surviving off of nothing but liquids and small meals. Being 6’6″ requires me to eat a lot if I want to get through my days without feeling woozy. As such, it is currently a little after 11 and my stomach is churning again. I resort to the only consumable thing at this hour, more tea and pepper-nuts, this time again going for my favorite flavor, liquorice.

Tea Time

By now it is time for dinner, but that looks like an impossibility as my roommates are having chicken breasts with corn. I resort to looking in my tea cabinet, and am not disappointed by what I see. As my grandparents just sent me a Dutch care package, I am stocked on delicacies from the Netherlands. I decide to go for a cup of the Liquorice tea with some “Peper Noten”, or Spiced Nuts.

I can’t even enjoy the biscuits…

Third meal of the Day

If you can even call it that. According to my MacBook dictionary, a meal is defined as “Any of the regular occasions in which a reasonably large amount of food is consumed”, and I have not consumed a large amount of food at all within these periods. I decided to actually get a decent bit of sustenance in however, so I had Yogurt and Muesli, a delicious snack. Being too crunchy however, I had to let the granola soak in the yogurt and give it a consistency reminiscent of Oatmeal.

Before indulging… in soggy muesli

Second Meal of the Day

Feeling the hunger rise again within me, I looked around at what could quell my cravings for a bit longer. At this point my options are low, as I am sure that the two hour between looking at the fridge for the first and sixth time did not restock it. I take a gander however, and see the bread and Nutella in the cupboards. I spread a nice creamy layer over the bread, and take a tentative bite. Immediately feeling it in my jaw, I cut off the crusts and try again. Much better.

My first tangible meal of the day…

First Meal of the Day

As I am thinking about the pain of my jaw, it finally dawns on me that I’ll have to be surviving off of a mainly liquid diet today

What I resorted to ‘eating’ as my first meal

. As such, I look in my fridge and decide what I want to have. My eyes focus on the gallon jug of “island FARMS” Homogenized Milk. This isn’t enough for my first meal, I say to myself, so I kept scouring. Next my eyes land upon the 10LB bag of protein shake on top of the fridge. Score.

Injury

As I am sitting here writing this, an immense feeling of pain is throbbing through my jaw. On the night of Saturday the 26th of October, my friends and I thought it a good idea to go to “Caprice”, a night club in Vancouver. It turns out that it wasn’t. Due to a miscommunication, I was the unlucky victim of a sucker-punch to the jaw; a right hook to be precise. I know now that this will prove detrimental to my eating abilities.

EDIT: I was right. 4 days later and I’m still unable to eat much.
