Are you starting to feel the stress of these upcoming midterms, or even your future? Well, your worries stop here! We have the solution to stay active, happy, and relaxed while making great memories as first-year residents! Keeping active and staying healthy will help you relieve some stress and keep you motivated to manage your short- and long-term goals. Organized by their relative distance from Place Vanier, this article shares many activities for you to check out this winter.
First of all, we have exciting suggestions to stay active without even leaving home! Joining the Vanier Ultimate Frisbee League is the perfect way to keep active this winter, which will not only help you stay healthy and happy, but it will also help you create those quintessential UBC first-year memories out on the field, come sun, rain, or snow with your housemates!
For those of you interested in going a little bit further into your UBC community, we have some suggestions for you, too! The UBC Yoga Club hosts many regular yoga classes every day of the week for various yoga levels. Be sure to check out their calendar at http://www.ubcyogaclub.com/calendar.html. Not into yoga? Try taking the 16 bus from the UBC bus loop to the stop just past Save On Foods to check out the Pacific Spirit Regional Park for some running trails or simple nature walks.
To further engage your sense of adventure, one excellent way to stay active this winter is by exploring your community with various hikes around Vancouver that can be reached via public transportation! For a short, sweet, and breezy break from studying, be sure to check out Lynn Loop. Something a bit more challenging for those moderate-level hikers ready to spend the day outdoors, Eagle Bluffs trail is the one for you. Check out more hiking information at http://www.vancouvertrails.com
Finally, for that weekend getaway vacation, we suggest joining a few friends or even the UBC Ski & Board club for a trek up to Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort this winter season! A great place to find a group of fellow residents to ski, snowboard, relax in the hot tub, and do some shopping at Whistler is your Place Vanier Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/vanier1415/. Also, earlier bird season passes for students are only $550 if you buy them before November 14th! See http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/tickets-and-passes/season-passes/student-pass.aspx for more details. Note that January 16th-18th is “college weekend,” where University students from all over North America come to Whistler to ski the slopes and explore the winter wonderland!
We hope that you take advantage of some of these incredible opportunities to stay active, healthy, and happy this winter. While you have four (or more) years to be a UBC student, we strongly suggest making as many first year memories as possible because you only get one year for those! So be sure to check out your weekly Saturday-Morning Vanier Ultimate Frisbee games, or even take a trip into the wilderness for a spontaneous study break, and make your first year memories while exercising for better health and a better life.
