About Me

Brett Gilley has been trying to decide if he is a Geologist or an Educational Developer since 2003.

He completed his Masters Degree in Earth Science at Simon Fraser University and has been running teaching workshops, designing courses and alternately inspiring and scaring students since then. He has taught at more post secondary institutions in the Vancouver area then he cares to admit.

For 7 years he was a Science Teaching and Learning Fellow in the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative (http://www.cwsei.ubc.ca/). This was an incredible experience and allowed him to observe all the amazing teachers in his department, “borrow” their excellent methods, and then help them improve. He knows that he got more out of this experience than most of them got out of him.

Brett is currently an Professor of Teaching in the Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Department (https://www.eoas.ubc.ca/) at the University of British Columbia. As part of his work he studies two stage exams (https://blogs.ubc.ca/eoassei/two-stage-exams/) and accessibility in Geoscience Education (https://theiagd.org/). He also runs many workshops on teaching and learning.

Brett loves both geoscience and teaching and sincerely hopes he is unable to resolve his apparent career dichotomy any time soon.
