EOSC 110 2022W2 – The Solid Earth A Dynamic Planet
2023W2 Student Experience of Instruction Report for EOSC 110 201 – The Solid Earth A Dynamic Planet
This is the introductory geology course for the department and usually has about 150 students, I was lucky enough to teach this term with a former undergraduate student David Sasse. We tried a few new things this term including introducing written and potentially AI assisted assignments to our large lecture class. This required some coordination with TAs and some strong rubrics for marking. Students were very complimentary of our efforts.
EOSC 114 2022W2 – The Catastrophic Earth: Natural Disasters
I taught two sections of this is a large introductory course (around 250 students) catered to students from a wide variety of backgrounds and knowledge. It is a difficult course to teach, as you don’t get much time to know the students, but one that is quite rewarding. This course is shared between four or five different instructors each term. In this offering I taught the landslides section of the course.
EOSC 330 – 101 2022W1 – Principles of Geomorphology
2023W1 Student Experience of Instruction Report for EOSC 330 101 – Principles of Geomorphology
This is a smaller 50 student course that really enjoy teaching. In this term I team taught with my colleague Jason Yeung. The audience is a mix of engineers, geoscientists, and a handful of students from other faculties. In this offering of the course, and as a direct result teaching with Jason, I received some the highest undergraduate student evaluation scores of my career.
EOSC 516 Teaching and Learning in the Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences
This is a graduate level course with a relatively small number of students. In this class we discuss principles of teaching and learning and let the students practice their teaching as well as giving feedback using the microteaching method. The students who take this class generally become excellent teachers in their own rights and the Teaching Assistants often with Killam Graduate Teaching Awards. In this offering I received a perfect 5.0 in all evaluation questions.
