Experimenting with Land Art

picstitch (1)

The land art activity involved arranging items we found in the natural environment to create a sculpture. Our group ventured outside to find inspiration for our art project. After experimenting with rocks, flowers and other materials we settled on weaving leaves through mesh. We designed a spiral by manipulating the leaves and even had a 3 dimensional addition to the center of our piece. A key component of land art, otherwise known as earthworks, is capturing the art piece in a digital image, as the object itself is temporary as inspired by Andy Goldsworthy.

Materials:

  • Camera, phone or other device to capture images
  • Imagination!

2. Arrange students in groups and give them time to walk and explore their environment before beginning construction.

3. Arrange found objects to create a sculpture.

4. Capture the found sculpture in a photograph.

5. Share your artwork with the class!
