• Natural material found in the earth
• Formed from rocks by being crushed and mixed with other minerals by the forces of wind, ice, water and pressure from other rocks
• Naturally occurring colors: white, yellows, reds and browns to black
• Classified into two types (based on firing temperature)
o Earthenware
▪ Low firing
▪ Most widely used in schools
o Stoneware
▪ High firing
