Definitions
• Wedging:
o Method of removing air bubbles from clay
o Roll the clay around on flat surface, pushing and pulling, so that the air comes out
o New clay out of the box à don’t need to wedge
• Slip:
o Liquid clay (clay mixed with water)
o Used as a glue to hold pieces together
• Bisque:
o The first firing of clay
o Done at a lower temperature compared to the second firing
o After this process, clay piece can be glazed and fired again
• Glaze:
o Used to decorate the piece
o Liquid glass that have ground down and mixed with colors or pigments
o Melts in high temperatures and turns a glossy coating
• Greenware:
o Dried clay that is ready to be fired
o Clay needs to be air dried for about a week before firing in kiln
• Kiln:
o Large, hot oven used to fire clay
o Need to fire clay to make piece permanent
