Holiday Gift Ideas

It’s that time of year again and just like every other year, you are stressing out as the days count down to the holidays and you realize that you still haven’t gotten any gifts yet! It may be because you haven’t had the time, but most of the time it is because you don’t know what to buy!! Well not to worry, this year you have me! So without further ado, here are some holiday gift ideas to tell the people who are the most important to you, just how important and special they are to you. 🙂

The ‘rents

Mom
Remember those handmade crafts you used to make when you were younger?

At this age, everything starts getting super nostalgic and chances are your mom thinks that you are growing up way too fast. Remind her that you are and will always still be her baby by making her a sentimental gift such as a scrapbook, a picture frame or a beautiful card. What is key is the time warp back to the past.

Or, keep the ones you love safe and warm with scarves, mittens, gloves, tuques, ear muffs, socks, slippers, pj’s, slipper booties etc. Does your mom have a favourite color or has always had an unusual obsession for cats, cupcakes, flowers, dogs, etc.? …if all else fails, go with the holiday print.

Dad
Same concept as mom! Go with sentimental, or was there that one kitchen appliance that he’s always wanted? Anything that needs to be replaced? Does your dad love sports? Does he need something to pimp up his new car? or what about that amazing wine, whiskey, or scotch that he’s been dying to try? If all else fails, bake dad an amazing cake. Even when he’s reaching his 60’s, food will always be the way to a man’s heart.

The sibs

SisterChances are, your sister probably provided you with a wish list. But if she hasn’t try buying some new clothes, jewellery, etc. Have a spa date after a long day of work for the both of you. Anything that involves sisterly bonding time would be a great gift. Take her to that movie she’s always wanted to see. Does she play sports? What about tickets to the hockey game? Does she need new sports equipment? Sport teams will be starting up practice again next season, why not let her start up the season with that new pair of soccer cleats? You get the idea… if all else fails? Gag gifts are the way to go! Anything from inside jokes you shared or any silly things that remind you of her from childhood would be perfect!

Brother
What’s that new video game that came out this season?! Better find out because chances are, if your brother owns a video game console, then he would probably be interested in the newest top hit. Does he have a favourite band? Cds, and vinyl disks are starting to become a big thing now that the hipster movement is taking over. Tired of seeing him wear the same t-shirt and jeans every day? Buy him some new clothes! (or a gift card to his favourite store! if he doesn’t have a favourite store try, american eagle, R & W Co., le chateau, mexx, h&m) Is he into sports? Try getting him tickets to the next big game! Does he play any sports? You could always get him new equipment, chances are that his old equipment is almost worn out after those intense rough games.

The best friend
The reason why they’re your best friend is because this special person shares the same interests as you! Chances are, what they like is probably very similar to things that you like! Start thinking of inside jokes you two share together, things you’ve done together, places you have gone to together. Anything that reminds you of them is definitely a good place to start. If they’re your best friend, chances are they have already mentioned things that they needed, things that they lost or broke, well here’s where you can come in! Replace these things by getting them a new one! Go that extra mile and personalize this item, whether it is their favourite colour, icon, style….. Anything!
If all else fails, get them something that you guys enjoy together!

The boss
Try a gift card a nice restaurant (cactus club, the keg, milestones) or something they can put in their office. A nice Bootle of wine that they could enjoy with their special someone would be a great ption was well!

The miss
The way to a girl’s heart is jewellery! Was there a necklace or earrings that she’s been eyeing for a while? If not try pandora or tiffanys or blue ruby, keep your girl warm during the winter season with a nice knit infinity scarf, a hipster toque or some fingerless gloves! Or for something really useful, get some magnetic finger gloves which cover your fingers to keep you warm and allow you to type on your touchscreen phone at the same time!
Girl’s also love clothes! Don’t know what to get her? Buy her a gift card and take her shopping! (Aritzia, victoria’s secret, bcbgmaxazria, le chateau.)
If you’re really looking to impress, buy her an full outfit and jewellery for your next fancy night out!

The boyfriend
Your man loves you and will definitely love anything you pick out for him because he wants you to be satisfied every time you look at him! Is there that one thing in his closet that needs to go? Is there something that you would love to see him in? For classy men try a silver wristwatch (guess, ) or a new suit tie that he could wear for the next date.

Keep him cozy with a nice scarf and mittens ( burberry, mexx, le chateau) on those cold date nights.
Perhaps he needs a new wallet because his old ones worn out. (Guess, calvin klein)
A new scent goes a long way! Try jean paul gautier, givency,or ralph lauren)

Here are just a couple of ideas to get you thinking. Don’t be afraid of personalizing your gifts to make them more meaningful for your loved ones. I hope this helped! Shop away everybody!!
Happy holidays !

Making the Most of 24/7

Ever feel like even if you added an extra Saturday, cut out Mondays, and bumped up your available hours for sleep up to 14, you still would feel like you didn’t have time for yourself? I know I do, more weeks than I’d like. Getting the most of your time may take some adjustments; here are some tips on where to start!

Stop spending so much time on social media

I know this is my greatest time-sucker. Some of my friends deactivate their accounts during exam time. Others disconnect Internet during work periods. A trick I use is to allow myself 5 minutes of social media time for every 20 of studying. Experiment with what works for you, and remember, it will still be there when you’re done your midterm!

Know yourself

Do you work or study best in complete silence, but really want to blast some Queen B? Are you still tired even after 8 hours of sleep? Okay, maybe these questions are just to myself. Either way, knowing what works and what slows work for you is essential to success. This may mean you have to do some experimenting. Try studying with music, in silence, in the library, in your room, in the kitchen etc. once you’ve found a favorite space, you can get in your zone and study effectively.

Be okay with saying “no”

Often when we feel that others are depending on us, we will stretch ourselves thin to help them out, even when we’re already busy and stressed. Out of fear that we will let people down, we knowingly take on more than we can handle. Doing this often increases your stress, which no one needs more of! A way to politely let someone know you’re too busy might be: “I have already committed to a lot this week; is there anything I can do to help out next week? I want to make sure I have the time to do my best”. Don’t be scared to say “another time”!

Don’t slack on sleep

Sleep is more important than we give it credit for sometimes. University students need at least 6 hours of sleep a night, and for many 8 or 9 is necessary to feel fully rested. While all-nighters are tempting, and okay every so often,

Napping is okay!

I never napped until I came to university, and now I don’t know what I’d do without them! A quick 20-minute nap revitalizes your mind and refreshes you so you can get back to work. Try to limit your naps to 40 minutes or less though, because past that point your brain slips into the second stage of sleep, making it harder to get up and leaving you feeling possibly more tired than you did before!

Stay on top of your health

What you put into your body has a huge affect on how you feel. Try to balance your meals, including something from each food group in each meal. Often, exercise time is one of the first things that get cut when we feel pressed for time. However, a workout doesn’t have to take a long time! Even a half-hour run will make a difference in your day. It’s easier to use your brain when your body feels good too!

Five Activities to do on a Rainy Vancouver Day

Five Activities to do on a Rainy Vancouver Day

1)      Vancouver Aquarium – With dolphins and belugas, as well as over 70,000 other creatures, the Vancouver Aquarium is a great way to spend a rainy day.  Keep warm inside walking through the attractions, sit down and watch an amazing 4D movie, and then pull that poncho over your head and outside for the rest of attractions!

2)      Vancouver Museums – Vancouver has some great museums such as the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Vancouver Maritime Museum, Science World, as well as the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) which is conveniently located directly on campus! Keep your eyes peeled for posters around Tbird and campus, MOA is a hot spot for advisors to host events.

3)      Bloedel Floral Conservatory – Situated atop of Queen Elizabeth Park, this conservatory is a great place to relieve some stress and take a stroll while bird watching and learning about ecology ( a great way to supplement your studies!)

5)      Vancouver Indoor Pools – If you don’t want to get wet outside, why not get wet while indoors.  Vancouver has some of the best indoor pools around, and they are a great way to get some exercise or relieve some stress in the hot tubs.  UBC has its own Aquatic Centre which is close to home, and who wouldn’t want to swim in the same water as a former World Record holder.

Waking Up Rested

As university students, it’s not uncommon to go to sleep late knowing you have to wake up early the next morning. Facing academic and social pressures, it can be difficult to get sufficient quality sleep. Contributing to this is a culture of “bragging” about how little sleep one got the night before. However, research shows that a lack of sleep impacts our ability to learn information, perform fine motor functions, and fight off new infections. Not to mention, it contributes to feelings of fatigue, which can leave you feeling drained. Keeping in mind the importance of sleep, let’s explore how to get the best sleep possible.

  • Get to sleep before midnight

Getting sleep early promotes deep rest.  Effective time management skills can help with accomplishing your daily tasks before bed. Prioritize important items by putting them on the top of your to-do list and bask in the glorious feeling of accomplishment when you cross them off.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine

Alcohol may help you fall asleep faster, but the quality of sleep is worsened. To avoid the negative effects of caffeine on sleep, it is best of stop by mid-afternoon.

  • Sleep by association

Keeping books, computers, and food away from the bed can strengthen the association between bed and sleep. Similarly, you can try a pre-sleep ritual to signal bedtime. This can include: drinking a cup of warm non-caffeinated tea, doing a crossword, or even brushing your teeth.

If you find yourself living a semi-nocturnal lifestyle and wanting to readjust your daily rhythm, it’s best to do so in small increments of 15-30 minutes over a week or two. This will prevent extreme tiredness during the adjustment period.

Medical conditions such as depression (or other mental illnesses) and sleep apnea can severely impact sleep. If you suspect this is the case, visit a healthcare professional to treat the underlying cause.

To find out how you can improve your sleep habits,  drop by the UBC Wellness Centre at Irving room 183.
