Where is “Raincouver”? There is only “Fogcouver”!

Environmentalist David Jones explains the reason why Vancouver is in the fog these days (see in the post linked). Some people are glad because they prefer fog rather than rain. However, some problems are caused due to the unusual fog. For instance, havoc on roads and grounding hundreds of flights out of Metro Vancouver are created by the heavy fog.

In fog, drivers need to adjust their speed and drive much slower than the speed limit. Cars should be fitted with proper tires and keep safe distances from other vehicles when conditions are bad. It means that the government is laying certain emphasis on the foggy weather as well as taking urgent measures. Also, costs spent on the traffic must have been raised to improve the safety.

In addition, problems in the air are serious too. Fog has forced the cancellation of many Harbour Air flights for the past week, disrupting travel plans for a great number of passengers. Unfortunately, passengers have been forced to make alternative arrangements. As a consequence, the heavy fog not only causes the problem in weather, but also a loss in economics for the whole country.

It proves that weather does play an important role in the whole economics of a country, so human beings should take the environmental issues into necessary consideration. It is forecasted that the foggy weather will end in this Sunday, which means rainy days are coming. But will the change from the unusual fog to the usual rain does benefit to the country?

Tokyo 2020 Olympics

As has been mentioned in Caoqingqing Fang’s blog, Tokyo will host 2020 Olympics. From her point of view, the government expenditure will be excess in tax revenue and it will be a good chance for Japan to recover its economics. I totally agree with the point, but I’d like to put more emphasis on the fact which Japan has to deal with in order to host the Olympics better.

During the process, Tokyo faced resistance because of the nuclear issue happened in 2011. The defensive in the final days of the campaign was the mounting concerns over the leak of radioactive water from the tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. In the final presentation, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave the IOC assurances that the Fukushima leak was not a threat to Tokyo and took personal responsibility for keeping the games safe.

There is no doubt that Japanese government has to solve the problem caused by the nuclear plant, which is not only a national issue but an international one. A huge amount of money must have been put in, and changes in economic structure must have been implemented. Since the safety and efficiency have been promised, what we can do is to look forward to the 2020 Olympics and figure out whether the hypothesis of the Japanese economic recovery is true.

Disney 90th Birthday

Walt Disney once said that he was not aim to only make children film. The films were dedicated to children in our hearts; no matter we are 6 years old or 60 years old. Since the first silent anime “Alice gets in Dutch” was born in 1923, Disney has been founded for 90 years. The Walt Disney Company celebrates its 90th birthday with a large-scale commemorative exhibition in the home town of its founder and namesake. The exhibition is on show in Chicago from October 16th 2013 to May 4th 2014, concentrating the nine-decade history of Disney. Visitors can also learn cartoon renderings from Disney animators.

The company has been valued in 2013 as the largest media conglomerate in the world by revenue. After acquainting Picks and Lucas successfully, the range of audience turns from girls and boys to adults gradually. Disney itself is also determined to providing the audience excellent home movies. The change of target market is a sigh of development and will lead the company to maximize the profit.

“Guests will be immersed in Walt Disney’s ‘can do’ spirit, optimistic outlook and never-ending curiosity that propelled him through his impressive career. This spirit continues to be the creative inspiration behind many of the incredible experiences created by Disney today.”

The Increase in Housing Price

BCREA (British Columbia Real Estate Association) has announced that there was a 4% increasing in Vancouver housing price recently. The housing market is overshooting itself. Meanwhile, Atherton, located in the center of Silicon Valley, becomes the most expensive housing area in America this year (the average price in Atherton is about 6700000 dollars. The housing price in Los Altos Hills also rises to be No. 2.

The soar in housing price is mostly a consequence of developments in technology, changes in the economic structure and participations of wealthy buyers from foreign countries. The high housing price exerts a heavy debt on ordinary people while provides a good opportunity for those multimillionaires to speculate and enlarge the gap of wealth. However, the market analysts predict that there will not be another apparent rise in a few months because of the weakness of economic as well as the difficulty in employment.

The change in housing price just reflects the economics of the country. More and more immigrants move to developed countries such as America and Canada, contributing a lot to the economic growth in these countries. On the other hand, the changes also widen the gap and make it more difficult for the government to control the market well. Only a stable market can guarantee promising developments, and the countries have to take economic measures to ensure the positive improvements.

Discount in Airlines

Recently, Air Canada is discounting in airlines. 15% off is really an impressive amount, especially during the Christmas. As far as I am concerned, air lines could make a lot of margin in this way.

For international students, Christmas is a good holiday when they can go home and reunion with their families. For tourists, the sales stimulate them to fly over the world and have a good time. For the air line, a slight decrease in price leads to a tremendous increase in demand, which maximization the profit. In addition, since the ticket price increases as time flies, customers usually book tickets in advance. Also, some rules are published that if the customers want to cancel the tickets, they have to pay a certain amount of charge. Therefore, the air line may not lose and seats are guaranteed in some aspect.

In conclusion, companies should be good at seeking the business opportunities. Such measures made by the air lines are absolutely beneficial to the companies themselves as well as the consumers.
