My Practice

In my practice I enjoyed teaching my kindergarten class with science, social studies and roots of empathy. At times it was challenging to mange a high energetic students in my classroom. I was able to gain a positive and learning experience with this class.

My science unit was on the Pacific coast sockeye  salmon. This unit we looked at the life cycle of the sockeye salmon. I had my students make a 3D sockeye salmon. This hands on started with my students drawing out their salmon and painting them red and green. Once the paint was dry the students cut out their salmon and we stapled them and stuffed them using recycled paper. We hung the salmon on the ceiling to give a salmon run effect.

My social studies unit plan was on the West Coast First Nations. We studied the history of the First Nations people on the Pacific coast.  We made 2D and 3D totem poles I tied this in with our maths because we where doing 2D and 3D shapes. It was a lot of hands on projects. The students especially liked the 3D totem pole which took a lot of work with gluing and piecing the totem pole together. The totem consisted the Eagle, person, frog and bear. We also learnt the different meaning the animals represented for the West coast First Nations.

I was able to participate with the roots of empathy program that started early in the school year. I really enjoyed watching the baby that came in and we got to watch her growth. The program was once a week and the baby came in once a month The kindergarten students learnt a lot about empathy towards other people. They participated in measuring the baby’s height and weight. With this information we were able to make a bar graph to see her growth throughout the year.

I am looking forward to having my own classroom to help with my growth to becoming a strong influential teacher.
