“A Dove Film”

I thought I have never been a person that notices a lot about marketing, but when the time comes where I have to blog about anything marketing related, I find myself swarmed in a world where marketing is truly everywhere. I started thinking about the memorable commercials, movie trailers (I’m a big fan of movies), sustainability and giving back messages on Starbucks cups…

However, the marketing strategy that amazes me is viral marketing; it can take forms in video clips and games. The thing about viral marketing is that it can be free (since it uses social networks like Youtube) and if it catches on, it spreads like wildfire. If the video is that amazing, people would be passing it to friends and posting it on blogs, facebook, twitter, and any other social networks. In a sense, those people would be advocates even if they don’t use the product.

Here is one of the viral videos that caught my eyes. It is a viral advertisement for the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty called Dove Evolution. I thought it was a great advertisement because of its bold message about self-esteem. According to Wikipedia, it generated over 1.7 million hits within a month. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the advertisement was discussed and viewed on television programs such as Good Morning America and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Parodies of Dove Evolution were created and Slob Evolution (a parody) was nominated for an Emmy Award.
