Shell causes environmental catastrophe in Niger Delta

by Timofey Rybakov

Social Responsibility for oil business is one of the most important objectives. However Shell for some reason did not adopt this common practice. The indifference Shell has towards environmental catastrophe in Niger Delta which was partially caused by this company truly shocks. Shell does not try to prevent consequences of the oil spills, but it even fails to stop oils spill in the right time. For example it took Shell more than one month to repair the weld which was causing up to 2000 barrels a day of oil spilled directly in the water. Apart from that Shell does not renew its equipment which also one of the reasons for the oil spills. Also it gives miserable excuse that rebels damage the oil pipes, however Shell is rather wealthy and powerful to secure the safety of the pipes and renew its equipment. None of this was done. More than sixty thousand of people are affected by this issues directly as they do not have clean drinking water and have health problems  because of it.

Company which believes that operating safely for everyone in particular region is impossible should not be operating there, Shell blames rebels for causing spills, but it stillcontinues to operate in Niger Delta, and cannot meet one of the main organizational objectives of being environmentally friendly and safe for everyone.
