Abstract

Everyone deserves to be happy. However, not everyone knows how to be happy. I personally believe that the ability to be happy stems from a sense of self, a strong support network and having purpose in life. Education is the perfect vehicle to deliver the means to happiness. The meaning of happiness and the way to achieve it is different for each individual and therefore education should be student-centred, focused on developing strong social and emotional skills. That way, students can uncover their own happiness. Students are individuals first and foremost. Hence, a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching neglects the exceptionality of each person. Failure to understand and cater to the strengths and weaknesses of our students will result in self-doubt and lack of ability for improvement. When students are taught and inspired to have a healthy sense of self, they can grow as individuals, dream of their future and ultimately be happy.
