{"id":97,"date":"2019-06-24T11:39:53","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T18:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/topo\/?page_id=97"},"modified":"2020-06-01T14:04:38","modified_gmt":"2020-06-01T21:04:38","slug":"stairs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/topo\/tools-knowledge\/elements\/stairs\/","title":{"rendered":"Stairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Stairs<\/h1>\n<div id=\"random-accordion-id-314\" class=\"accordion-shortcode  accordion-container\">\n<h3 ><a href=\"#introduction-0\" >Introduction<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"introduction-0\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><p>Stairs are always unique design opportunities as they are integral to how we move through &amp; perceive space; as such, always consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">The comfort of the stair riser-run relationship<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">The speed of movement suggested by stair design<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Detailing of treads, rails, &amp; cheek-walls to provide aesthetic integration, comfort, &amp; ease of use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Simultaneously, stairs are often barriers to universal access in the spaces we create; as such, always consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Local building codes for best practices for layout &amp; detailing<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">When in doubt, err on the side of ease-of-use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-120\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/topo\/files\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2019-06-24-at-12.15.12-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"646\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 ><a href=\"#convention-1\" >Convention<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"convention-1\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><p>There is wide flexibility in the design of stairs, but steps that comply with accessibility standards should generally be designed within the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Tread lengths of at least 12\" [ 300mm ]<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Treads with approximately 1% to 2% slope for drainage<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Well-marked risers [ visual + textural ]<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Risers between 3\" [ 75mm ] &amp; 7\" [ 175mm ]<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Avoid open risers [tripping hazards]<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Landings at least 5' [ 1.5m ] long<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Landings whenever there are 12 or more risers required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Always verify with local building codes<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 ><a href=\"#user-experience-2\" >User Experience<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"user-experience-2\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><p>As with any circulation design, stairs are integral to how we experience a site. The comfort of the user is important; as such, always consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>With which foot the user enters and exits a set of stairs [ to allow for an intuitive flow ]<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Length of the human stride [ approximately 2.5' or 0.75m ]<\/li>\n<li>Height of user [ where their eye level is in relation to the height of the stairs ]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-358\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/topo\/files\/2019\/06\/Walking-up-stairs-longer-pause.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1258\" height=\"814\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>User experience considerations for stairs.
