 ♥ Self-description

 I am not a techno-crazed individual, but I do attempt to be aware of what options are available for use within the training environment.  I enjoy social environments, both physical and virtual, and believe that it is essential for people to have contact with others so that learning can occur.  In my world, I am a training specialist and the people I advise are knowledgeable and experienced in their specific field; often, they know intuitively if the training designed will not work.  Advising on training is a privilege, thus it is my responsibility to be up-to-date on current educational research and new education technologies.

 Experience

 I have provided a brief overview of my experience that may be relevant to the ETEC 565A course.

 Work experience:

  •
    • -18 months teaching military f2f and distance courses on the military’s Systems Approach to Training (SAT);
    • -Currently employed as a Standards and Development Officer in Cold Lake, AB;
    • -Undergone CF training for 8 months to become a Training Development Officer; and
    • -Worked with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) to develop SAT courses.

 Academic experience:

  •
    • -Began a B Ed in my first two years of university (U of A);
    • -Completed a B Management at Dalhousie (Halifax);
    • -Completing the MET program this semester.

 Other:

  •
    • -Engages in annual Training Development Symposiums and Conferences.

 Goals

 My goals for this course are not yet clearly defined.  I normally like to take the first two weeks to get to know the other students and instructor(s), then proceed to formulate my goals.   I am positive that as the course progresses, I will modify my goals to match my personal interests and to ensure that I can transfer the material I will be learning to my individual workplace.

 As I am not a teacher, my overall goal for taking this Masters is slightly different from most of my classmates.  The knowledge that I gain from this program will be used to advise and not to actually implement or instruct.  It is important for me to note that within the CF, there are very strict regulations on the use of technology within the Intranets; thus, the use of educational tools such as Moodle and other open source community based tools are restricted.

 To date, I would like to accomplish the following goals during this course:

  1. Develop a stronger understanding of effective formative and summative assessment in a digital format;
  2. Develop a wider understanding of individual learning goals within standardized performance oriented content. (With a focus on digital environments); and
  3. To learn more about educational technologies that my benefit the schools in my organization.
