What are the five themes of citizenship?

The five themes of citizenship that I want to incorporate within the classroom are: Honesty, compassion , respect, responsibility and courage.  Hopkins (2011), provides explanations for what each theme looks like.

Honesty: For someone to be honest, they should be truthful to themselves and towards other people.

Compassion: Is caring about people and the world.

Respect: Respect for yourself and for others. To be mindful of people’s opinions.

Responsibility: To take ownership for one’s actions.

Courage: To do the moral thing.

Not only should students be taught to be involved in their classroom, students should also be encouraged to be active citizens in their community (Kielburger et al., 2009.)  Acts of compassionate can be encouraged by explaining to students that we are all connected with each other in the world.
