I have learned that life is constantly evolving and changing. I have spent over a decade working in Human Resources. With this knowledge, I have decided to venture into the field of education. By obtaining a Bachelor of Education I hope to apply my previous experience with my new found knowledge and skills into a classroom. I hope to help shape young people as they head on to become our future leaders. This may sound idealistic; however, having two children of my own has helped me to realize how important the teachers they have in a classroom are.
Change expands our mind, broadens our horizons, and helps us on our journey to be lifelong earners. It is with this perspective that I hope to enter the classroom and educate my students. I want my students to be able to leave my class with more then what they entered with.
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader” (John Quincy Adams).
This is a great quote that gets at the heart of how I think I will teach my students. It will be with great effort that I strive to enlighten my students. Encourage them to be more then they believe and to never stop challenging themselves.
I think my corporate background and volunteer experience can help me do this. I can apply theory and learning into real world application. I can engage my students so that they can see the benefit to the material I present, maybe not every class but certainly for every course. My students should come out of my class with the feeling that they have learned something. They need to realize that I have taught them something and they are more knowledgeable then before taking my class. Hopefully they will find the material applicable to something in their everyday non-academic lives.
I will use enjoyment in the classroom. I will be firm but fair and will always be available to assist students that want to learn. I will make sure that students learn accountability and responsibility. I will teach them that these things along with professionalism and hard work can help them achieve tasks that they may only dream of right now. My classroom will be an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and more importantly getting answers. They will learn how to explore and understand the world around them.
Secondary school needs to prepare individuals for life whether it be to enter the work place or continue on to a post secondary education. I think our classrooms need to build real life skills for students so they can go on and succeed in whatever road they take in life.
