Living\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0western\u00a0country,\u00a0I\u00a0feel\u00a0like\u00a0it’s\u00a0easy\u00a0for\u00a0us\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0disconnected\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0reality\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0situation\u00a0in\u00a0countries\u00a0like\u00a0Iran.\u00a0Therefore,\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0every\u00a0intrigued\u00a0on\u00a0how\u00a0a\u00a0comic\u00a0book\u00a0could\u00a0highlight\u00a0the\u00a0misconceptions\u00a0of\u00a0Iran’s\u00a0history.\u00a0Before\u00a0reading\u00a0Persepolis<\/em>,\u00a0my\u00a0knowledges\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0Islamic\u00a0Revolution\u00a0was\u00a0limited\u00a0to\u00a0what\u00a0I\u00a0learn\u00a0in\u00a0textbooks\u00a0at\u00a0school\u00a0and\u00a0what\u00a0the\u00a0media\u00a0projected.\u00a0However,\u00a0as\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0reading\u00a0Marjane’s\u00a0story,\u00a0I\u00a0realize\u00a0my\u00a0own\u00a0misperception\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0whole\u00a0situation\u00a0:\u00a0instead\u00a0on\u00a0focusing\u00a0only\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0regime,\u00a0I\u00a0forgot\u00a0to\u00a0pay\u00a0attention\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0context,\u00a0the\u00a0conditions\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0suffering\u00a0of\u00a0Iranians.\u00a0Sometime\u00a0reality\u00a0is\u00a0even\u00a0worst\u00a0than\u00a0what\u00a0we\u00a0denounce\u00a0and\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0what\u00a0Marjane\u00a0describes\u00a0to\u00a0us\u00a0through\u00a0short\u00a0stories\u00a0that\u00a0she\u00a0witnesses\u00a0herself.\u00a0Conflicts\u00a0in\u00a0Iran\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0there\u00a0for\u00a0so\u00a0long\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0West\u00a0has\u00a0banalized\u00a0violence\u00a0:\u00a0Iran\u00a0has\u00a0always\u00a0been\u00a0a\u00a0territory\u00a0of\u00a0war\u00a0which\u00a0means\u00a0that\u00a0Iranians\u00a0has\u00a0always\u00a0lived\u00a0under\u00a0an\u00a0oppressing\u00a0government\u00a0and\u00a0will\u00a0always\u00a0be\u00a0Thus.\u00a0the\u00a0omnipresence\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0banalization\u00a0of\u00a0violence\u00a0under\u00a0a\u00a0totalitarian\u00a0regime\u00a0was\u00a0considered\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0“normal”.\u00a0For\u00a0example,\u00a0in\u00a0Persepolis<\/em>,\u00a0we\u00a0can\u00a0see\u00a0that\u00a0even\u00a0the\u00a0kids\u00a0start\u00a0to\u00a0play\u00a0political\u00a0games\u00a0and\u00a0imitating\u00a0prisoner\u00a0who\u00a0are\u00a0being\u00a0tortured.<\/p>\n

Despite\u00a0the\u00a0fact\u00a0that\u00a0this\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0memoir\u00a0and\u00a0it\u00a0tells\u00a0a\u00a0past\u00a0story,\u00a0we\u00a0can\u00a0easily\u00a0related\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0more\u00a0recent\u00a0version\u00a0of\u00a0those\u00a0experience\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0consequences.\u00a0For\u00a0instance,\u00a0during\u00a0my\u00a0last\u00a0trip\u00a0to\u00a0France\u00a0the\u00a0previous\u00a0summer,\u00a0when\u00a0I\u00a0sat\u00a0in\u00a0public\u00a0with\u00a0my\u00a0Iranian\u00a0friend\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0subway,\u00a0I\u00a0could\u00a0see\u00a0and\u00a0feel\u00a0the\u00a0contemptuous\u00a0look\u00a0of\u00a0people\u00a0on\u00a0him,\u00a0as\u00a0he\u00a0was\u00a0some\u00a0sort\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0threat.\u00a0He\u00a0explained\u00a0that\u00a0it\u00a0has\u00a0always\u00a0been\u00a0like\u00a0that\u00a0since\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0terrorist\u00a0attacks\u00a0in\u00a0January\u00a0that\u00a0occurs\u00a0in\u00a0Paris.\u00a0It\u00a0felt\u00a0absurd\u00a0to\u00a0think\u00a0that\u00a0people\u00a0were\u00a0blaming\u00a0a\u00a0complete\u00a0stranger\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0tragic\u00a0event\u00a0due\u00a0to\u00a0their\u00a0ignorance\u00a0or\u00a0their\u00a0lack\u00a0of\u00a0understanding\u00a0or\u00a0blind\u00a0hatred.\u00a0Therefore,\u00a0we\u00a0sometime\u00a0generalize\u00a0people\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0country\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0decision\u00a0of\u00a0its\u00a0government.\u00a0In\u00a0my\u00a0personal\u00a0opinion,\u00a0I\u00a0strongly\u00a0disapprove\u00a0such\u00a0level\u00a0of\u00a0misperception.\u00a0People\u00a0should\u00a0not\u00a0be\u00a0judge\u00a0or\u00a0oppressed\u00a0because\u00a0of\u00a0their\u00a0birthplace.
