Judy’s Effect On Vision

Posted by in Uncategorized

Hey Global Citizens, So for the past two weeks I have been stumped on the issue of global unity and what that looks like, because I honestly have no clue. My previous Idea of global unity has looked like some sort of global government where the government is representing the people fairly, people are sharing similar cosmopolitan values and people making decisions for the global good as opposed to the local good. In this vision that I have had the global unity has looked very equal, educated and urban. Through…read more

Judy’s Solution?

Posted by in Uncategorized

Dear CAP students, Its great to be back writing another blog post after the very candid discussion surrounding human unity today. Today we revolved around two different theories of global humanity and how global citizens can be realistically modeled. Our dear friend Judith Butler, or Judy as I call her, navigates with fine brush strokes how humans are valued by other humans. In a quick thirty pages, Judy theorizes that humans value one another based on similar identity, in other words we value the people who are in our interpretive…read more

Obosan’s Future In Canada

Last Thursday my ASTU 100 CLASS went to the University of British Columbia’s Archives to find original documents within the fond of Joy Kogawa. In her fond held beneath the Irving K. Barber learning center we found many different manuscripts that Joy Kogawa and other patrons donated that include but not limited to original drafts of her book Obasan, family trees, historical timelines, early rejection letters and editorial corrections. Within the plethora of flies, one manuscript that stood out to me and many people in my class was a…read more

Gorazde’s Truth

Posted by in Uncategorized

It feels like it has been a while since I have written a blog. And over the past couple of weeks we have covered a lot in regard to memory. We have mostly switched our medium of learning from academic articles to narratives which has provided are class with a very nice and well deserved break from scholarly language, in my opinion. We were introduced to a graphic narrative called Safe Area Gorazde by Joe Sacco, which centers around an American journalist who goes to the former Yugoslavia during the…read more

Is Anything Personal Anymore?

Posted by in Uncategorized

It’s a relatively a simple concept, however, in my ASTU 100 class we have learned that memory can actually be a more complicated concept than previously thought. In a traditional perception, memory is a simple concept where by an individual records and stores auditory, visual details of events and situations. The details are used as a learning tool where they can be used in similar or different situations that have yet to come. However, this traditional way of thinking about memory, that most of the general public and I have,…read more

When The World Is Silent

Posted by in Uncategorized

“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” -Malala Yousafzi Growing up as a child I was very curious. I was the kid at the dinner party who always sat at the kid’s table yet always had one ear listening in on the adult’s table. As much as I loved having an elastic imagination and being a kid, there were definitely times where I wanted to be apart of the adult’s conversation because I wanted to be aware of what was happening in the world around me….read more

The Repetition of History

Posted by in Uncategorized

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana (1863-1952)   George Satanyana’s quote is famous, whether you are sitting in history class or chatting with a friend, the words “history repeats itself,” are bound to arise somewhere in daily conversation. A question was raised in my English literature class briefly, however, it stuck with me for days. On our fist day of class we were given our theme for the course, which summarized is “how literature affects and creates memory.” We started with talking…read more
