Hey Global Citizens,

So for the past two weeks I have been stumped on the issue of global unity and what that looks like, because I honestly have no clue. My previous Idea of global unity has looked like some sort of global government where the government is representing the people fairly, people are sharing similar cosmopolitan values and people making decisions for the global good as opposed to the local good. In this vision that I have had the global unity has looked very equal, educated and urban. Through social technology reaching and connecting people from around the world I assumed that people would establish cosmopolitan values shared by all people and a single cosmopolitan narrative of history would be created. The uniting of humanity would be mean world peace, through time space compression.

However, I’m starting think question if my dream or vision that I once had is naive or even possible. Bringing the conversation back to Judy, Judy believes that the world is divided into a “I” and an “other,” whereby the “I” having the power distinguishes itself from the “other” by identified similarities and differences. Although within this, besides the similarities and different distinguishing these groups, the “I” has power over the “other,” creating a uneven power dynamic.

Because of the idea of similarities and differences in human values and beliefs such as religion, spirituality, economics, race and gender it makes me wonder if there will always be a “I” and an “other.” I look at historical conflicts like Christianity’s conflict between catholic and protestant believers and contemporary parallel’s like Islam’s Shiite and Sunni conflicts. Although followers follow the same religion there is still conflict. In Post-World War Russia, economic inequality sparked tension just like class tensions in North America where wealth disparity is growing despite a similar language and culture being present in both nations. I am never the person who is pessimistic but this idea has popped into my mind.

I wonder if anything can be can be done to stop the development of these two groups, or if there can be harmony between the these two power groups and if having these groups can still create a vision of global humanity that I have?
