Workshop Outline & Objectives

Objectives:

  1. Introduce participants to the concerns of twitter and social media use in 2014
  2. Introduce possible applications for the use of twitter as part of a PLN and learning activity
  3. Demonstrate the basic functions and features of Twitter
  4. Get students to craft a tweet as part of a collective and learn to tweet using a hashtag

Workshop outline:

Introduction: (2 min)

  • Please introduce yourself, your position and why you are taking this workshop in the comment section below on this page.

Activity 1: (5-10 min)

Activity 2: (20 min)

  • Go to minute 12:20 of the Peter Mansbridge one on one interview and watch the next five minutes of what Jesse Hirsh has to say about privacy and the use of social media tools in 2014.
  • Next read the blog post by Philip Sweezey on reaching new frontiers with twitter.
  • Finally read the one on one interview with Andrew Keen the author of Digital Vertigo and continue to the discussion page to post your thoughts and reflections on what you read.
      • What are your concerns with integrating twitter into your practice?
      • What ways do you see this being a positive influence in your classroom / school / district?
  1. Mansbridge: One on one with Jesse Hirsh
  2. Phil Sweezey: Reaching new frontiers with Twitter
  3. NY Times: One on one with Andrew Keen

Activity 4: (30 min)

  • Log in and take part in the demonstration and walkthrough of twitter:
    • Walkthrough of the basic layout and features
    • Basic glossary
    • Potential applications in the classroom
    • Collective write a tweet to #edchat
    • Post your own tweet to suggested hashtag
      • #edchat, #elearning, #edtech

Activity 5: (10 -15 min)

  • Finally you are encouraged to post your thoughts and ideas of how you plan to integrate twitter into your teaching practice. Go to the final participant reflection page and post to the padlet.
  • Post additional ideas, comments and questions on twitter using the hashtag #TeachTwitter
