Fresh Grade

You have probably heard the exciting news that Tyee Elementary is part of the VSB Communicating Student Learning Pilot Project (CSL Pilot Project). This was decided at the last PAC and Staff meetings on October 25th, 2017 and was reported in the November newsletter.

The main differences you will notice this year are that there will be two written report cards instead of the usual three. These will come out in January and June. At Tyee, parent teacher and student led conferences will continue as usual. Each division will also be required to report out a fifth time. This will look different in each classroom. Divisions 3, 6, & 7 have decided to use the online student portfolio, FreshGrade.

FreshGrade will allow us to communicate student learning in a vibrant and vital ongoing fashion including photos, videos, and most importantly student input and ownership. Students will become more involved in selecting the work they would like to share in their digital portfolio. Parents will also be able to comment on their child’s work.

With this letter, please find attached information about FreshGrade and a consent form to be signed at your earliest convenience. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have about this exciting new way of student reporting.

Please bring back your signed consent form as soon as possible so we can begin learning and using this tool!

Intergenerational Learning Project

Field Trip Wednesday November 8th

1:30-2:10pm

Division 3, a grade 4/5/6 Montessori class at Tyee Elementary School, is working on an Intergenerational Project.  Our goal is to build friendships and understanding between children and seniors.  By matching pairs of students with a senior buddy at Chelsea Manor, we hope to provide an opportunity for the students to make genuine connections with seniors in their community, while learning ways to strengthen existing relationships with seniors in their lives such as grandparents and neighbors.

Each visit will have a different focus. On November 8th, the pairs of students will introduce each other through an interview project that they have completed in the classroom.  Then they will play cards and board games with their buddies.  On December 13th, both the seniors and students will share important artifacts to talk about. After each visit, students will record observations, background details, questions and stories based on the conversations with their buddies.
These visits along with further visits after the Christmas break, observations and storytelling opportunities will hopefully lead to a final project where the pairs of students can present their senior buddy in a way that feels authentic to them.
Math

Math Notebooks are due on Thursday, as usual.

The students from all three grades will be participating in an Albanesi Check-Point this week to ensure that they are applying and extending the skills they are learning.  As a result, there will be no problem solving this week.

Language

This week Language work will be due on Thursday.  We will be having our Spelling test Thursday morning.

We have been working on organization and paragraph writing using various strategies.  The final copy of your second writing assignment will be due on Thursday November 9th.

Culture
Students shared their learning of the Kingdoms of Archaea, Bacteria, Protista and Fungi on Friday afternoon.  This week we will continue learning about helpful and harmful bacteria.
Classroom Community
There is no explicit homework in Division 3; however if you are falling behind in your work, notice that you’ve been participating in Finish Friday’s quite a bit, and are always on the Ketchup List, you may need to consider bringing work home.  It is my expectation that you are finishing all your work by the due date.
