Field trip to the beaty biodiversity museum

Dear Parents,

I have organized a field trip to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC for December 21, 2017.  The field trip cost will be $22.00 for the workshop One Life to Live and the bus trip up to UBC.  I have looked into taking public transit, however we won’t have enough time in the morning to take the long route.  The cost of the field trip with parent volunteer drivers would be $11.00.

If you are able to volunteer to drive students to UBC on the morning of December 21st please email me in the next 48 hours (or by Friday December 8th at 9am).

I need at least 6 parents to volunteer.

Please email me at hlangille@vsb.bc.ca if you have any questions or would like to volunteer.

Riddle of the week: You see me in water, but I never get wet. What am I?

Shoeboxes for Shelters

Dear Families,

This year Div. 3, 4 & 7 are supporting the charity, The Shoebox Project for Shelters over the holidays. The charity collects and distributes gifts in the form of Shoeboxes to women who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in the downtown East Side.

About the Charity:

For women who have been displaced from their homes and estranged from their families, the holidays can be a particularly challenging time. Often, women feel disconnected from society, forgotten and alone. Reducing the feelings of isolation and loneliness faced by women living in shelters is one of the most important outcomes of The Shoebox Project. A shoebox gift is a powerful reminder for a woman that she has not been forgotten and that she remains a valued and respected member of her community.

How to Make a Shoebox:

  • You can either make a Shoebox at home, or bring in items and the children will wrap and assemble the Shoeboxes in class. If you make a Shoebox at home don’t wrap the box closed. The charity inspects all items before giving the boxes to the women.
  • Each Shoebox must be valued at approximately $50 – see the suggested items!
  • Consider lining the Shoeboxes with tissue paper first for a more polished, elegant look
  • Don’t overstuff your box; make sure the lid fits on properly and doesn’t pop off
  • Avoid including items that are overly delicate to avoid anything getting broken in transit
  • Don’t forget to write an inspirational message!

Suggested Items to Include:

  • Something warm: socks, mitts, scarf, hat, hand warmers
  • Something sweet: nut-free chocolate and candy (not alcohol-filled)
  • Cough drops, multivitamins
  • Body or hand lotion, soaps, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
  • Brush, comb, shampoo, conditioner
  • Nail polish, mascara, eye shadow, lipstick, lip balm
  • Purse-sized Kleenex, small cosmetic bag
  • Gift cards (Tim Hortons, Shoppers, McDonalds, etc.)

Please write the amount on the card or include the receipt

  • Subway tokens and bus tickets
  • Journals, colouring books, pens, coloured pencils
  • Supportive message

What to Leave Out:

  • Used goods
  • Hotel Samples
  • Sized clothing (i.e. S, M, L, XL)
  • Mouthwash containing alcohol
  • Candles
  • Foundations, concealers
  • Hand-sanitizers
  • Perfume ** (Check your local chapterfor exceptions)
  • Razors
  • Jumbo-sized containers
  • Books

Fresh Grade

All students have brought in their signed consent forms for Fresh Grade and have a portfolio up and running.  This week I have been connecting parents to the portfolio accounts.  Please let me know if you are having trouble or if there are any glitches.  So far, it seems to be working.

Students are learning how to use iPads in a mindful and meaningful way to post about their learning.  I’m encouraging the students to reflect on their work and consider the reasons why they want to share and post before they post.

The 3 big questions we are focusing on with Fresh Grade are:

  1. Where am I?
  2. Where am I going?
  3. How am I going to get there?

There are 6 Core Competencies outlined in the new BC curriculum: HERE

Communication

Creative Thinking

Critical Thinking

Social Responsibility

Positive, Personal and Cultural Identity

Personal Awareness and Responsibility

While being mindful about what we choose to post to Fresh Grade, students will be asked to reflect on which core competency they most used while completing the given work they have chosen to share.  Try using this language at home!

Math

Math Notebooks are due on Thursday, as usual.

Since it is a short week, problem solving will be due on Thursday.

Language

This week Language work will be due on Thursday. We will be having our Spelling test Thursday morning.

We will continue our pre-writing and draft writing for a persuasive writing piece while learning about voice and the power it has with writing.

Culture

We will be doing science with Ingrid Monday November 27th from 1:15-2:45pm.  The focus for this afternoon is chemistry.

Students will continue learning about evolution and natural selection.  Students will also be working in groups to explain symbiotic, commensalistic, parasitic relationships between animals.

Artist in Residence

Here’s an update on how the remainder of the sessions will look like:

Nov 30 begin stitching and/or folding and pressing with an iron
Dec 8 continue stitching/folding and begin planning exhibition
Dec 14 final touches, stretching if possible, begin artist statements
Dec 21 exhibition and celebration of learning

It would be great to have parent volunteers for the next few sessions. Please email me at hlangille@vsb.bc.ca if you are available.

Artist in Residence: Thursday November 23

Just a reminder that we are painting cloth again on Thursday.
This will be our last messy session. Students will need to have their final sketches/models completed before Thursday.

I will be taking a tally of how many are doing 3D and how many are doing 2D. It would be nice to be able to stretch the 2D pieces over a support to further extend the feeling of making a piece of art.

Julie and I met last week and discussed moving the exhibition date to December 21 and adding an additional in class session on Friday December 8.

Here’s an update on how the remainder of the sessions will look like:

Nov 23 painting cloth
Nov 30 begin stitching and/or folding and pressing with an iron
Dec 8 continue stitching/folding and begin planning exhibition
Dec 14 final touches, stretching if possible, begin artist statements
Dec 21 exhibition and celebration of learning

thanks everyone!

Culture

This week we will be continuing our study of the Animal Kingdom.  Students will be learning about evolution and natural selection and how adaptations are a product of this over many generations.

Classroom Community

Whole class body breaks:

Division 3 had a long chat on Thursday afternoon about whole class body breaks. I know in the past with other teachers and up to this point in the year, Division 3 has had at least 3 recesses throughout the day. As of this Tuesday there will be only 1 recess and this will be the lunch time recess.  Moving forward the students are going to practice recognizing when their body needs a break or fresh air rather than me telling them to have a break at a set time everyday. Students of this age need to start recognizing what they need to self-regulate and take initiative so that they can succeed. This will look different for every child. Students will have the option to do a few laps around the school, skip with a timer, practice their handstands against the wall outside or do any fitness movements we have been learning.

In the loop: November 14-17

Riddle of the week: How do you make the number one disappear?

We made sourdough bread this week. Ask your child to explain the process that happens while bread is rising.

400g flour

280g water

1 tbsp salt

3/4 tsp yeast

What Kingdom does yeast belong to?

Reminders

Monday November 13th: Day off in lieu of Remembrance day, no school for teachers and students

Thursday November 16th: Field trip to the Vancouver Aquarium. Please bring in your $23.00 and field trip form as soon as possible. If your parent can volunteer please have them email me at hlangille@vsb.bc.ca. I am looking for at least 1 parent volunteer.

Fresh Grade

You have probably heard the exciting news that Tyee Elementary is part of the VSB Communicating Student Learning Pilot Project (CSL Pilot Project). This was decided at the last PAC and Staff meetings on October 25th, 2017 and was reported in the November newsletter.

The main differences you will notice this year are that there will be two written report cards instead of the usual three. These will come out in January and June. At Tyee, parent teacher and student led conferences will continue as usual. Each division will also be required to report out a fifth time. This will look different in each classroom. Divisions 3, 6, & 7 have decided to use the online student portfolio, FreshGrade.

FreshGrade will allow us to communicate student learning in a vibrant and vital ongoing fashion including photos, videos, and most importantly student input and ownership. Students will become more involved in selecting the work they would like to share in their digital portfolio. Parents will also be able to comment on their child’s work.

With this letter, please find attached information about FreshGrade and a consent form to be signed at your earliest convenience. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have about this exciting new way of student reporting.

Please bring back your signed consent form as soon as possible so we can begin learning and using this tool!

Intergenerational Learning Project

Field Trip Wednesday November 8th

1:30-2:10pm

Division 3, a grade 4/5/6 Montessori class at Tyee Elementary School, is working on an Intergenerational Project.  Our goal is to build friendships and understanding between children and seniors.  By matching pairs of students with a senior buddy at Chelsea Manor, we hope to provide an opportunity for the students to make genuine connections with seniors in their community, while learning ways to strengthen existing relationships with seniors in their lives such as grandparents and neighbors.

Each visit will have a different focus. On November 8th, the pairs of students will introduce each other through an interview project that they have completed in the classroom.  Then they will play cards and board games with their buddies.  On December 13th, both the seniors and students will share important artifacts to talk about. After each visit, students will record observations, background details, questions and stories based on the conversations with their buddies.
These visits along with further visits after the Christmas break, observations and storytelling opportunities will hopefully lead to a final project where the pairs of students can present their senior buddy in a way that feels authentic to them.
Math

Math Notebooks are due on Thursday, as usual.

The students from all three grades will be participating in an Albanesi Check-Point this week to ensure that they are applying and extending the skills they are learning.  As a result, there will be no problem solving this week.

Language

This week Language work will be due on Thursday.  We will be having our Spelling test Thursday morning.

We have been working on organization and paragraph writing using various strategies.  The final copy of your second writing assignment will be due on Thursday November 9th.

Culture
Students shared their learning of the Kingdoms of Archaea, Bacteria, Protista and Fungi on Friday afternoon.  This week we will continue learning about helpful and harmful bacteria.
Classroom Community
There is no explicit homework in Division 3; however if you are falling behind in your work, notice that you’ve been participating in Finish Friday’s quite a bit, and are always on the Ketchup List, you may need to consider bringing work home.  It is my expectation that you are finishing all your work by the due date.
