I love that there are many ways to look at one problem. I love the challenge of working through a problem until I can get it right. I love trying to identify patterns and seeing how these patterns spill over into nature, science, language and even art. Some of you feel this way, others\u2014not so much. I hope to get each of you excited about math this year. I know that when you are excited about math, it is because you feel confident and challenged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Are the Expectations?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always in a Montessori classroom, you will be expected to work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at your own pace<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to master the math concepts that are appropriate for you (and expected of your grade level). Keep in mind that \u201cworking at your pace\u201d means doing math work that keeps you confident and challenged\u2014not too hard, not too easy. <\/span><b><i>You are expected to put in a consistent and focused work effort.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of your math work will be guided by the materials and the corresponding Albanesi cards. You will be able to do much of the work independently, but will also need to find an appropriate time to get lessons from me or other students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How Will You Show Your Math Progress? <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You will complete work in your math notebook each week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You will complete this statement \u201cI am working on . . . \u201c each week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I will observe you working by yourself, in a group or with me.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I may observe you teaching a classmate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will complete Albanesi tests when you have mastered a particular skill.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will complete longer tests each term that assess grade level skills.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Is There Other Math Work?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. In addition to weekly personal math work, you will be assigned weekly problem-solving. At the beginning of the year, this will involve studying different math systems (past and present) with special patterns and ways to show place value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Notebook Expectations:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1) Each time you work in your notebook, include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Date<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name of Material<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name of specific activity or lesson<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Number of Albanesi card, if appropriate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) Work neatly and legibly<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) Use the space well: filling the page but don\u2019t squish your work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) Mark your own work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a different colour pen\/pencil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before you turn it in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write and complete this statement the first time your work each week: \u201cThis week I am working on . . . \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s to a fantastic year of learning math!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fondly,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ms. Langille \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Students of Division 3, I write to you to let you know clearly and specifically about my expectations for Math\u2014and learning lots of it&#8211;this year.
