Sustainable Partnerships: Movies

In class, we recently discussed the importance of partnerships with the goal of creating sustainable ideas, replacements, and systems. It is very difficult for one individual organization to challenge certain topics like food scarcity, global warming and other various issues. Alone, only a small piece of the pie can be tackled, however, by partnering together, groups can accomplish much more.

Firstly, the problem is that some companies would see partnering with others as against strategy. By partnering with competitors or different companies from other industries, they can waste time, resources or lose value to their current strategy. Thats why these partnerships are hard to find, especially when they are tasked with sustainability initiatives.

However, I have one idea in which the partnership can affect a large sum of people. The movie industry is one of the largest and most influential industries (socially) in the world. The messages that the movie carries through the story is at the heart of current topics. For example, the Avatar movie carried a deeper meaning than alien civilization and our human obsession with exploration and space. The story described how we humans go to new areas and destroy the culture and civilization in order to put our own values down and strip the land of its resources. The movie industry could begin to focus on these types of stories in order to influence popular culture. The power and viewership that a single movie has is so large in scale that this idea should be considered.

  • A few examples of partnerships that could help this:
    • Between the award organizations and large movie producers
      • Develop a new category to focus on movies with positive messages or sustainbility
        • This would change the focus from movies focused on sustainability through documentaries to simply incorporating and encouraging this in entertainment movies
    • Between popular movie producers like marvel and corporate sponsors
      • With marvel already creating superheroes or characters focused on doing good, the proposed adaptation of this would promote certain values in which corporate sponsors can contribute. Corporate sponsorship already happens in movies as you can see products that the characters use are clearly placed in the movie.

Quite simply, by adapting the thought process of the movie industry, a trickle down effect of influence can affect a large market.
