In class, I recently had a couple thoughts on the large and innovative company that we all know as Apple. This post is almost like a twitter shoutout to all the good things they do, but with two ideas;
- First, apples campus and taking that idea further.
- Second, why aren’t other companies as progressive as Apple.
I mentioned the great design and innovation of the apple campus a couple posts ago and I still believe that. I pondered what the potential of apple putting another campus in China. Specifically where the production facilities are in China. Apple currently outsources production to global producers, not because it is cheaper but because it is faster. Apple “breaks down the global complication” by using producers. (Entrepreneur)
- With over 700,000 foreign held jobs relative 43,000 domestic and 20,000 US jobs held in abroad countries, (stats from 2013, entrepreneur) apple still holds a strong connection to a part of the world in which they are not directly employing individuals. These numbers have grown exponentially.
- The thought I had was wether or not apple would build another $5 billion dollar campus in China. Its not a bad thought considering it matches up with their values of supplier responsibility. (supplier responsibility for apple is debatable) A building of such magnitude would promote sustainable education as well as social sustainability by promoting each step of supply chain education.
- What I learned after some research was that Apple actually does there own work in this regard by promoting an education channel for factory workers. Apple has its own network, but would they spend $5 billion dollars to provide the same value to this part of the supply chain as they have in the US? Thats the a big question for the future as corporations will always look at the impact of their decision. This one is not necessarily a bottom line helper.
Secondly, Apple is clearly leaps and bounds above other corporations when it comes to sustainability from environmental and social purposes. Is this because of Steve Jobs and his personal values. Maybe. Maybe since his passing the company has kept these values close to heart because its the future of business. Either way, other corporations should understand how apple did not adapt but lead these innovations. Its time to lead, not follow.
I promote a company on every post so why not this one. Small tech start up? https://www.apple.com/ca/
