8 Reasons to Oppose Vancouver 2010

1. Collonialism and Facism

2. No Olympics on Stolen Land
The government continues to sell, lease and develop native land for the benefit of corporate resource extraction and ski resorts.

3.Ecological Destruction
2010 game is one of the most environmentally destructive. 100,000 tress have been cut for the highway expansion in whistler which results in habitat loss for sensitive animals and bird species. Winter Olympics 2010 generated more than 3.7million tonnes of CO2 emission.

4. Homelessness and Poverty
The Vancouver City homeless rates have increased by 370%. In 2007, the fair play housing rights report over 2 million people have been displaced by the Olympics games in various host cities since 1980s.

Picture 1Host cities began to campaign to criminalize the poor. In Vancouver, project civil city was launched, this project featured strict new by laws targeting street vendingĀ  and sleeping outdoors; with thousands of impoverish people less than 1km from the venue of the opening ceremony.

carbon footprint – not good enough?

This is actually my second time calculating it and I definately don’t remember the results. However, the followings are my current results:
Picture 3

Picture 4

I’m actually quite surprised how my long distance travel took up so much of the pie chart. But after all, if you ask me whether it bothers me or not? I’m going to say no. I’ve seen it before and I’m looking at it again, it still doesn’t matter to me. I’m not disagreeing with being green but I’m just saying being green is not that easy especially when the world is improving with all the technology innovations and educations. As the generations keeps developing, the world has to keep improving in order to keep the population. We cannot do this by cutting down on our daily activities such as biking instead of driving or eat more organic food. We need to create things that reduce greenhouse gas emission. For instance, the hybrid cars.

So carbon footprint after all is not an effective way to “change our minds”. šŸ™

When Nano Arrives in North America…

Based on class topic “Marketing Meets Accounting”.

The world’s cheapest car has arrived in India in July 2009 at the retail price of just over 2,000USD. Tata Motors has designed the Nano to make ownership more accessible to people who have lower incomes in India and also hopes to see the “low-buck city car” arrives in the North America by 2011.

Nano will bring convenience to many people especially college students with such price. I’m really excited to see it’s appearance in North America soon! I wouldn’t say Nano will be very successful in North America but I’m pretty sure it will make the sales. However, whether or not it will have a huge affect other car brands is still a question.

As for myself, if I needed a car during my university years, I would definately get Nano cause the price is cheap. The quality however would be one of the doubts people would have while buying Nano. Therefore, I wouldn’t use Nano to travel long distance. But I don’t doubt that Tata Motors will improve the quality of Nano in the future. We’ll just have to wait and see.
