Formal Research Proposal

To: Professor Paterson

From: Andy Xiao

Date: October 11th, 2018

Subject: A Proposal for improving the unhealthy eating habits for U.B.C. students.

Introduction
In the University of British Columbia with over sixty thousand students, the vast community has always placed value in two specific things, and those are education and fitness. In a prestigious environment like UBC, students are constantly trying to improve themselves mentally and physically, yet one very important aspect that most students overlook is eating. The daily consumption of food has been a major issue for many students living on campus, as students struggle to find meals at a reasonable price. Moreover, students may lack the time and energy to constantly cook for themselves as the process is immensely draining for full-time students. Going through undergraduate years, one thing I have realized is how much emphasis my peers put on their body image and how going to the gym was a priority. Nevertheless, so few of my peers go through the process of a healthy diet because of the demand for time and effort.

Statement of Problem
Although a majority of UBC students understands the importance of fitness and strive to become physically healthy, students remain unaware of the important concept of preparing meals and consuming them periodically for a balanced nutritious diet. Students at UBC are not getting the right portions of meals, many are either consuming way too much or way too little. Hence, the fitness results of many students remained stagnant because of their unawareness on the impact of a healthy diet.

Proposed Solution
One possible solution is a campus offered delivery service that helps prepares student’s weekly meals. Furthermore, these meals will be specifically tailored towards the student’s lifestyle, body composition, and fitness goals. Moreover, for students to really get the most out of this service is consistency as students must continuously consume them throughout the week. Moreover, we will have different packages tailored to different individuals, ranging from beginner to extreme. The differentiator of the packages will be the strictness of the diet and the number of meals it contains. For example, a beginner’s meal will only include seven boxes of meals per week which means they won’t be sick of the repetition as they can be flexible with their meal consumption; additionally, beginner’s package will have a different flavoring from the extreme package to provide a fine balance of taste and nutrition.

Scope
To assess if there exists a market for a meal prepping service, I plan to pursue six areas of inquiry:

  1. What restaurant options are currently available for students, and what are the competitive prices on these selections?
  2. How large are the student’s demand for a freshly prepared meal that is delivered?
  3. Will the prices offered for this meal preparation service be competitive in comparison to other food options on campus?
  4. Does the market contain room for another meal delivery service?
  5. What are the cost and operation logistics in creating an entity that offers such a service?
  6. What prices for the product and service can the students bear?

Methods
My primary data sources will include consultations with over one hundred UBC students to see if eating has been a problem in their life and if this is a service that will be helpful to mitigate their stress and struggles.  I will also calculate the operational logistics to see if it is possible to successfully manage a large quantity of demand in a short notice of time. I will construct my primary research with survey questions that are conducted on virtual social media platforms. Secondary sources will include looking for academic literature on the issue of unhealthy meal consumptions and the impact it has on an individual’s body. Furthermore, by doing a more in-depth analysis of the precise ratio of fitness progress that is achieved in the gym and in the kitchen.

My Qualifications
I have been exposed to the fitness industry for over five years now. Moreover, I have also been part of the UBC community for the last four years, with enough experience regarding the food on campus. I have taken many courses on nutrient and how to construct a healthy meal. Moreover, I will be graduating from the faculty of sociology this upcoming summer; hence, I am confident in my abilities to research the market with different sampling skills I have learned in my major.

Conclusion
Evidently, the importance of eating healthy is no longer a choice but a lifestyle that students should refuse to overlook. By addressing the six areas of inquiry mentioned earlier, I can determine the possible market for this service and the exact struggle of students when it comes to following a healthy diet. Additionally, I will be able to see if this entire operation is possible to even achieve by understanding the operational side of the entity. With your approval, I will begin research at once.

Subject: Unexpected Service Fee

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I have been a regular customer of your bank for the last past 25 years, I have always enjoyed banking with Canada Trust. But today, after my transaction at a TD nearby my house, realized there is a missing 48 dollars from my chequing account. Frankly, I was shocked more than anything else, as, throughout my entire experience with you guys, I had never had any problems. However, in this case where money was withdrawn from my account without my consent. I believe as a loyal customer of so many years, I deserve a reasonable explanation for the sudden service fee. The debit from my account occurred on November 18th, 2018 if that helps with allocating the issue. Furthermore, I am reaching out only because of the significant sum of money that was taken, if it was only a couple of dollars, I would have pardoned it.

In this case, I was wondering if it is possible to reverse this service fee as a one-time exception of the years of loyalty I have with you guys. I would also like to know what had happened and will this be a recurring issue.

Please let me know when you read this email, I would appreciate a timely response on this matter.  Please feel free to contact me for any questions at Andyxiao@hotmail.com

Best Regards,

Dear Mr. Xiao,

Firstly, I want to thank you for your continuous support in TD Canada Trust, we appreciate all the years you have dedicated your business to us. Moreover, we would also like to express our gratitude for your complaint, as we are very sorry to hear about your terrible experience yesterday. We sincerely apologize for all the inconvenience it must have caused.

The core value of TD Canada Trust is trust, and that value carries the weight of responsibility for all of our clients Mr. Xiao. We are terribly sorry that our teller at the site yesterday failed to capture the system reduction and explain the situation in clarity. The reason the service fee was debit out of your account is due to insufficient fund left in your account, and because your account went to a negative balance, the system automatically debits forty-eight dollar from your chequing account. We apologize that you were completely unaware of this as we will wave the forty-eight dollar deduction as a valued client courtesy. However, because we have now reinformed you of such a service fee’s existence, we would not be able to provide another exception if the same situation was to happen again.

I hope you have found this email helpful, and we hope you were supportive in the matter. Thank you once again for reaching out to us, we want to ensure that all your problems are resolved. Please feel free to reach me at MJ123@hotmail.com for any questions or regards in this matter or any other issues you may be experiencing. I am more than happy to be at your assistance.

Kind Regards,

Three Definitions (Andy Xiao)

Introduction:
Hello, classmates of ENGL 310. The purpose of this assignment is to define a term in various methods of technical writing to help enhance my literature abilities as well as allowing you guys understand it better. The term, in this case, is “Mutual Fund”. The criteria to follow for the assignment is to apply the parenthetical, sentence and expanded definition towards the term mutual fund. This is a very interesting term that I refer to frequently at work and I believe it is a core financial term that could be supplementary to the entire class.

Term: Mutual Fund

Parenthetical definition:
One of the best places to put your money today is in a Mutual Fund (A type of financial investment)

Sentence Definition:
Mutual Fund is an investment where individuals pool their liquid capital together into one massive pile of money for the purpose of investing in securities such as stocks, bonds, money market instruments, and other assets.

Expanded definition:

History:
Many decades ago, people struggled immensely with the concept of investing. A doctor could have a very high income but has no idea how to handle his money, as it sits in a savings account and loses its value to inflation. Then came the first modern-day mutual fund, Massachusetts Investors Trust. The mutual fund was created on March 21, 1924, as it was the first mutual fund with an open-end capitalization, possessing continuous issue and redemption of shares by the investment company. Throughout the period of one year, the fund encountered a growth of 784% from $50,000 to  392,000.  Lastly, in the contemporary financial society, the Canadian mutual funds’ industry directly created $5.8 billion in real GDP and had a total economic footprint of $17 billion (1% of total GDP).

Negation:
A mutual fund is not just a type of equity or bond, it is instead a massive combination of all types of investing commodity in one single portfolio. When a mutual fund is purchased it does not mean the fund holder needs to understand the stock market and perform any type of trading. All the asset allocation for the portfolio is handled by a team of financial experts, where they will constantly buy in and out of different sectors with their expertise.

Operating Principle:
For an individual to legally own a mutual fund requires the trade to be processed by a mutual fund representative. In order to become a mutual fund representative, he/she must take the certification exam for Investment Fund Institute of Canada and pass with a 60% or higher. Moreover, there are two ways of investing in a mutual fund. First is called a lump sum investment, where the customer inputs a large portion of money at the initial stage of the transaction. On the other end of the spectrum, there is also a Preauthorized periodic plan, where customers set up a pre-authorized debit for a period of time and the money will automatically be invested at the periods chosen. When a customer successful owns a mutual fund, they can monitor the portfolio of the fund to see where the assets are being allocated and the return on those investments.
