About UBC German Corner

UBC German Corner is an initiative that was started to encourage UBC students who are learning German to take their language learning journey outside of the classroom. It’s an educational resource website dedicated to supplementary resources for learning German, in addition to regular classroom resources such as textbooks. Our website covers a variety of resources catered to learners of all levels, ranging from beginner to advanced.

Our goal is to equip UBC students who are learning German with the tools they need to effectively and successfully learn the language. We aim to make the process of learning German fun and enjoyable, because engaged learners are motivated learners. We hope to motivate learners to take charge of their language learning journey and keep up with learning German independently outside of class.

The original UBC German Corner website was developed by Dr. Florian Gassner, a professor in the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies (CENES) at UBC. In Fall 2024, Melissa Phua, a graduate of the UBC German Studies program, noted that the website had not been updated for some time. Recognizing its potential as a valuable resource for German learners at UBC, she took the initiative to develop and design a new website for the UBC German Corner.
