{"id":1837,"date":"2017-03-16T12:27:27","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T20:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/?p=1837"},"modified":"2018-03-21T11:16:19","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T19:16:19","slug":"welcome-to-the-new-pda-executive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2017\/03\/welcome-to-the-new-pda-executive\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to the new PDA Executive!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/files\/2017\/03\/PDA-AGM-pic-small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1842\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/files\/2017\/03\/PDA-AGM-pic-small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"464\" \/><\/a>The new UBC Postdoctoral Association\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2017-2018-executive-team\/\">2017-2018 Executive Team<\/a> was elected at the annual general meeting held last Thursday, March 9<sup>th<\/sup> at the Life Sciences Institute, following a brief recap of the previous year from each of the outgoing Executive Officers.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Smith, the outgoing president started things off with a brief overview of some of our past events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2016\/04\/special-speaker-bobbi-lambright\/\">The special seminar by Bobbi Lambright<\/a> \u2013 May 2, 2016<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2016\/06\/the-3-minute-postdoc-slam-of-2016-event-review\/\">3 Minute Postdoc Slam<\/a> \u2013 May 26, 2016<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2016\/12\/ubc-postdoctoral-research-showcased-in-2016-pda-research-day\/\">Research Day<\/a> \u2013 November 24, 3016<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He also mentioned some of our advocacy and outreach activities on behalf of the outgoing VP External who couldn\u2019t attend, and some of our previous social activities that occurred under both Justin Hart (VP Social 2016), and Jessica Bosch (VP Social pro tem 2017).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2016\/11\/the-presidents-report-on-the-2016-caps-agm-and-capa-conference\/\">The CAPS\/CAPA meetings<\/a> \u2013 October 31 \u2013 November 2, 2016<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/forvancouver.wordpress.com\/\">Future of Research Vancouver<\/a> \u2013 February 20, 2017<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2016\/10\/ubc-pda-winning-prizes-at-mahonys-trivia-tuesdays\/\">Mahony\u2019s pub trivia<\/a> \u2013 Every Tuesday, 7:30 PM<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/category\/socials\/\">Numerous other social events over the year<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our outgoing VP Operations, Zoe Riches, gave a quick overview of the role of the VP Operations and described a few of the duties involved, then handed the floor to Jenny Chik, our outgoing VP Communications. Jenny discussed the role of the VP Communications, then described our increased reach\u00a0with postdocs through increased newsletter subscriptions and a great social media presence. Houra Loghmani-Khouzani then gave a quick overview of the VP Finance position, and the current state of the PDA\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p>We then heard from each of the candidates running for officer positions (their statements of interest can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2017\/03\/2017-election-candidates-and-constitutional-amendments\/\">here<\/a>. All positions except for VP Finance were elected by acclamation.<\/p>\n<p>Following the vote for VP Finance, the new 2017-2018 Executive Officers are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>President \u2013 Kieran Hudson<\/li>\n<li>VP Operations \u2013 Mehrdad Bokharaei<\/li>\n<li>VP External \u2013 Moe Elgendi<\/li>\n<li>VP Communications \u2013 Ido Hatam<\/li>\n<li>VP Finance \u2013 J\u00fcrgen Niesser<\/li>\n<li>VP Social \u2013 Jessica Bosch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During this meeting, the PDA also voted unanimously to formalize <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/2017\/03\/2017-election-candidates-and-constitutional-amendments\/\">previously proposed<\/a> changes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcpda\/constitution\/\">constitution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new team will officially take over from April 1, 2017, with the remainder of March used to facilitate a smooth transition from the outgoing to the new incoming team.<\/p>\n<p>We strongly encourage people to get involved with the PDA!
