This briefly covers chapters 1, 2, and the Hall of Shame readings. We hope you all enjoyed yourself today!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><u>Teaching Physical Education Today \u2013 Chapter 1<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical education was initially intended for the purposes of war<\/li>\n<li>Historically focused on instilling discipline and moral values in youth<\/li>\n<li>Medical exams revealed many men and women were unfit for service<\/li>\n<li>1943 National Fitness Act to promote physical fitness in schooling<\/li>\n<li>PE philosophy changed after WWII to an approach that nurtured development of the whole child: physical, social, and cognitive<\/li>\n<li>More student facilitated and greater variety of movement forms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Teaching Physical Education Today \u2013 Chapter 2<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Need knowledge of content (what to teach) and pedagogy (how to teach) + need knowledge of child and youth development<\/li>\n<li>Need to understand students\u2019 social and emotional needs<\/li>\n<li>May have certain degree of physical literacy; need to recognize that just because it comes easily for you does not mean it may be the same with your students<\/li>\n<li>Have a vision for teaching: be aware of the goals, connect various elements of teaching, explain to students purpose of learning activities, and explain teaching approach to students, parents, etc.<\/li>\n<li>If students understand reasoning behind tasks, they are more likely to find personal meaning in education<\/li>\n<li>Can be very difficult for pre-teachers to overcome\/change beliefs from their own schooling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>The Physical Education Hall of Shame<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Characteristics of PEHOS games:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0Absence of purported objectives of the activity<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0Potential of embarrassment<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0Focus on eliminating students from participation<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0Overemphasis on having \u2018fun\u2019<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0Lack of emphasis on teaching motor &amp; lifetime physical fitness skills<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0Extremely low participation time factors<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0Large groups where getting a turn is based on luck or competitiveness<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0Extremely high likelihood for danger, harm, or injury<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The purpose of physical education is to promote and support the physical, emotional, cognitive, and affective development of the students.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Questions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In the past P.E. was initially created to ensure people were fit for the military. How have expectations shifted since then? What does the future of P.E. hold for students?<\/li>\n<li>Do you agree with the PEHOS?
