I’ve Been Spun Right Round
by carlywen ~ February 8th, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized.Tonight I went to my first spin class ever at the Birdcoop. It was actually the first time I’ve ever set foot in the Birdcoop. Personally, I can’t stand gyms. They’re cold and sterile and have way too much metal in them. We live in the most comfortable climate in Canada and one of the most beautiful cities in the world, why on earth would you want to be inside??
The thought of riding a bike that doesn’t actually go anywhere is bizarre to me; I feel the same way about treadmills. You’re using up so much time and energy but you’re not going anywhere… Although, it’s pretty awesome to know that you can go as fast as you want without that gnawing feeling in the back of your mind of what if your brakes cut out? There’s also the benefit of not having cars drive way too close to you.
The class was a bit intimidating at first because of the amount of UBC Tri Club members in the class but it ended up being pretty fun (even if I did stay in one place). Oh, and you’re going to sweat profusely. There’s no glistening in spinning, people were actually dripping. Downside: I don’t think I’m a good pedaller. I kept staring at other people’s feet to see what they were doing. (If any of you reading this were in the class, I apologize for staring at your feet. I promise I’m not totally creepy.) Surprisingly I’m not sore at all, but that most likely means I didn’t work as hard as I could have. However, it was my first attempt at spinning and I didn’t really feel like puking. But now I know I can push myself more. Hopefully by the end of this class I will actually be able to make it up the NW Marine Drive hill without dismounting and angrily swearing about how much I hate biking.

The great thing about spin classes is that you get to choose the difficulty of your workout

Pedaling in spin class takes a little while to get used to. When putting your feet in the cages, ask the instructor how far in they should go, that way you’ll get the most out of your workout. It’s also important to pull up on the cages when pedaling, not just pushing down. That’s when you really start to feel it.
And remember to bring a towel and a full bottle of water (I can go through 1L) or you will die. It gets more fun the better you get at it, I promise!
I would also recommend Juliet’s classes at the Coop. She give the best full body workout possible with the best playlist.
