“Be Prepared Not Scared” – My UBC TriDu flowchart training tool

A simple flowchart poster is my UBC Tri race prep focus. As a provincial emergency preparedness volunteer my attention always centers on safety and sureness no matter what the task. Getting ready for my annual participation in the UBC Tri calls for flawless preps. My flowchart poster comes in handy every year.

I became a tri-ing Grannie (F65-69)quite by accident when my first-born Coach Gordo Byrn won the Kona Ultraman 3 day triathlon event in 2002. In order to be a good sport I decided to join in with active triathlon participation.

The key to flowchart training is to be consistent. Every single aspect of training is recorded on one large, highly visible chart. By linking each effort(nutrition, stretching, yoga, gear preps, strength sessions etc)memory kicks in and on race day preparation is at a maximum level.

My chart is posted in my kitchen. My goal, a podium finish after a fun-filled day, is highlighted on the far right of my chart. Every effort including early bird registration, study of course in case changes have been made, swim fit training if required and so forth is written on the chart. Every action contained in a small oval or circle is linked. The chart details are reviewed on a daily basis.

This year coaching from my son’s YouTube site has included squats for building muscle mass as well as treadmill posture training – quite fantastic with economical energy output as a goal.

Great idea! That’s one thing I love about Triathlons – the amount of effort (mental and physical) that goes into preparation and training is unreal.

Do you think we could see a copy of the flowchart? I don’t want you to divulge your winning secrets, but just to make it easier to wrap my head around your idea.
