New Quizzes is a Canvas assessment tool that currently co-exists with its predecessor Classic Quizzes. Instructors have the option of using either type of quiz, and this page will provide clarity on the similarities and differences.
What’s New with New Quizzes?
New Quizzes has some new features not available in Classic Quizzes. As New Quizzes is currently still in development, this list is not conclusive. Some interesting additions are:
- New question types such as hot spot, stimulus, categorization, and matching.
- Option to enable word minimum/maximums, word count, and spell check for essay questions.
- Option to shuffle the order of all questions.
- Option to vary points per multiple choice answer option.
What’s Lost with New Quizzes?
Inevitably, as Canvas shifts to offering only New Quizzes, we will lose some of the features we love from Classic Quizzes. Currently, these features are:
- Saving reminders.
- Multiple fill-in-the-blank type questions in paragraph form. New Quizzes multiple FIB, but all the blanks must be in one continuous sentence.
- The ability to make text-only questions that are typically used to introduce question prompts, or create section divides within an exam.
- The ability to reduce exam writing time for any latecomers.
- The ability to use the Lockdown Browser integration.
- The ability to export a report of student responses to essay questions.
