The UBC Sauder Learning Labs are a-typically arranged classrooms that foster collaboration, critical thinking, analytical decision making, and effective communication. Large tables enable group work and lively discussion. The walls are covered in back-lit whiteboards, which serve as large canvases for writing down ideas and mind maps. Large screens enable students to view media, as well as communicate with other teams in the room or anywhere around the world.

The Labs consist of two rooms –– David Lam 005 and 009. Both have multiple tables to accommodate for large groups of students. Every table has a corresponding TV and whiteboard that students can incorporate into their learning experiences. The Labs use AirMedia, a wireless presentation system that users can easily download on their computers. Each of the tables are equipped with microphones, so discussions can be heard from around the room and students can speak directly to guest speakers over Zoom.

A staff member will be available to turn on the labs for you and make sure that your device is connected to the monitors in the room. When booking, please specify your set-up so that we can have everything prepared for you beforehand. Let us know if you have any special requests, including laptops, clickers, adapters etc.

Learning Labs Goals

  1. Provide students with the experience of team collaboration, thus supporting our program goals of critical thinking, analytical decision making, and effective communication.
  2. Emphasize “room capture” as opposed to “lecture capture”, with the agility to broadcast the labs to the world on any platform, and (virtually) bring the world’s best minds to our students.
  3. Break the time/space barrier. Our graduates are encouraged to take on the challenges of joining global organizations and to work with other players in situations where neither time nor space are restrictions, but rather advantages to those organizations.
  4. Ensure seamless integration of advanced technology. Technology should run in the background, adding to the transformative educational experiences in the space instead of distracting from them.

What makes the Learning Labs unique?

  1. Wireless AirMedia ports allow seamless connectivity
    • The absence of plugs removes the awkwardness of sharing one’s screen with everyone in class, allowing seamless transitions across differing content.
  2. “Room capture” rather than “lecture capture”
    • Video conference hardware is not required, giving us the ability to broadcast what’s happening in the rooms to the world on any platform.
  3. Connectivity to the world
    • Cameras at the end of each boardroom table allow connectivity to devices brought into the space, and allows our students to (virtually) bring the best minds of the world to the table.
  4. Simple wired acoustics
    • Microphones on every table ensure that everyone in the room is heard, without the uncomfortable “let me get a mic on that” moments.
    • Attenuated audio keeps the speaker’s sound at a natural level no matter where you sit in relation to them.
