Sauder Learning Services can help arrange and record any video-based assessments. In particular, we can help with debates (in the style of COMM 292) and student presentations (in the style of COMM 196).
COMM Debates
You will be greeted by a staff member or student staff to help assist you with your debate’s recordings. There will be a microphone centred at the front of the room where your teams will present their argument. Alongside the microphone, there will be a camera on a tripod, and both devices will be connected to a laptop. The technician will be positioned roughly in the centre of the classroom to capture the discussion between both teams.
Your technician will assist you for the entire class recording.
Please confirm with the staff member which debate number this session is and the name of the starting group (affirmative or opposition). Before allowing the groups to start speaking for the debate each time, check in with the technician to see that they are ready. This is to ensure the delivery of the whole presentation has been recorded, and no content is missing.
Once the debate has concluded, the technician will pack up the equipment and leave discreetly. The recording should be available immediately in the “SXRS” folder in Panopto.

COMM Student Presentations
There will be a staff member and student staff to help you with the recording process. Rooms 491A, B, C and 492A, B and C will be set up for you with equipment to record the students’ presentations. There will be a monitor facing the audience in the room for them to watch the slides and follow along as the presentation is underway.

If there are any issues with the recording and a retake is suggested immediately, the present staff will make a note on the quality assurance sheet. The QA sheet is used to sign off every presentation once the checks for audio and visuals have been completed. Any discrepancies will be noted immediately as the checks can be carried out moments after the recording has occurred. Personal make-up sessions are available for any retakes later in the term.
On the day, if there are any late students or issues with the slides (i.e the wrong file format), this will be noted on the attendance sheet. Please let a staff member know if there are any issues prohibiting students from presenting (i.e slides that were not submitted on time or in the incorrect format etc).
The videos will appear instantly on your Canvas page.
You will be sent an attendance list beforehand, so you are aware what groups are sitting together on presentation day. After the sessions are complete, a staff member will send you all the attendance and quality checks for that day via PDF.
