{"id":1647,"date":"2024-08-06T09:27:42","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T16:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2024-08-06T10:21:44","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T17:21:44","slug":"grading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/grading\/","title":{"rendered":"Grading"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This section describes best practices for grading student work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js is-open sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-first\" data-initially-open=\"true\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"accordion-1\"><h2 id=\"at-16470\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Setting up assessments in Canvas<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16470\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Use the built-in Canvas features to make marking and calculating grades easier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assignments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">The following can be configured in every Canvas assignment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the number of points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how the grade is displayed (i.e. points, percentage, complete \/ incomplete)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the assignment counts towards the student&#8217;s final grade<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quizzes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every Classic Quiz created is set as a &#8220;Graded Quiz&#8221; by default. This means that instructors must indicate a correct answer for each question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, a &#8220;Graded Survey&#8221; can be used to collect responses which do not need to be marked \u2014&nbsp;anyone who submits will get full credit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Group Weights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Instructors can create different &#8220;groups&#8221; within Assignments to organize student tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A weight can be configured for each group. For example, there can be a &#8220;Midterm&#8221; group worth 25% of the student&#8217;s grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canvas will follow these values to calculate each student&#8217;s final mark accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instructions on how to add group weights, please see here: <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-weight-the-final-course-grade-based-on-assignment\/ta-p\/746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-weight-the-final-course-grade-based-on-assignment\/ta-p\/746<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-first\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"accordion-2\"><h2 id=\"at-16471\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">SpeedGrader<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16471\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>SpeedGrader allows instructors to view and grade assignment submissions in one place. It makes evaluating assignments quick and easy. NOTE: multiple people <strong>should not <\/strong>grade assignments at the same time, because SpeedGrader <strong>does not<\/strong> automatically update with the latest information for each submission.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Using SpeedGrader, instructors can quickly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>See how many assignments have been graded so far<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See the average score for the class<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cycle through each student&#8217;s work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Annotate student work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add comments and feedback<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>More information on Speedgrader can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sauderteachingplaybook\/canvas-grading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sauderteachingplaybook\/canvas-grading\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rubrics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">For more structured grading, instructors can create rubrics and attach them to assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In SpeedGrader, simply click on the rubric cells and Canvas will automatically sum up the points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note \u2014&nbsp;rubrics cannot sum up points for quizzes, only assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rubric page can be accessed from the left-hand course navigation menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information on Rubrics can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sauderteachingplaybook\/rubrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sauderteachingplaybook\/rubrics\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-first\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"accordion-3\"><h2 id=\"at-16472\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Canvas Gradebook<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16472\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Canvas Gradebook is a page that allows instructors to see all students, assignments, and grades in one place. Instructors can access it by clicking on &#8220;Grades&#8221; in the left-hand course navigation menu. It has three additional viewing modes, which can be changed by clicking on the currently selected mode and choosing a different one from the drop-down list. Not all settings are available in each mode. The modes are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Gradebook&#8221; &#8211; the main viewing page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Learning Mastery&#8221; &#8211; assessment based on Outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Individual View&#8221; &#8211; assessment of individual students on separate assignments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Gradebook History&#8221; &#8211; a log of grade changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of this section is focused on the &#8220;Gradebook&#8221; mode.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Columns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Each column corresponds to an assignment or quiz in the Canvas course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">The order of these columns corresponds to the order seen in &#8220;Assignments&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Search \/ Filter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Use the search bar to search for specific students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To filter students by section, select View &#8211;&gt; Filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grade Directly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Click into a student&#8217;s cell to input a grade directly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click the arrow to expand more options, including (1) the ability to leave comments, (2) mark an assignment as &#8220;Excused&#8221;, and (3) launch SpeedGrader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manual Grade Posting Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">By default, instructors are encouraged to to use the &#8220;Manual&#8221; grade posting policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">This means that any marks \/ comments input will not be visible to students UNTIL instructors select &#8220;Post Grades&#8221; in the column. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To set this policy for the entire course, click the Settings cog \u2014&gt; Grade Posting Policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To toggle this policy for specific assignments, hover over the column header and click the 3 dots \u2014&gt; Grade Posting Policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Import and Export Grades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">If needed, grades can be exported into a CSV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bulk changes can be made in the spreadsheet and re-imported back into Canvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use case \u2014&nbsp;making a new column to provide students with a scaled midterm \/ final score, without needing to release the raw marks. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-references\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"accordion-4\"><h2 id=\"at-16473\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Posting Final Grades<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16473\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content sauder-accordion-content-references\">Final grades must be uploaded to the Faculty Service Centre in order to be deemed official.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-first\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"grading-best-practices\"><h2 id=\"at-16474\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Grading Best Practices<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16474\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>If a student has been excused from an assignment and approved by the program office<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Best practice in this case is to mark the student assignment as &#8216;excused&#8217; in the Canvas Gradebook.
