{"id":1693,"date":"2024-08-06T10:21:48","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T17:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/?p=1693"},"modified":"2024-08-13T14:39:20","modified_gmt":"2024-08-13T21:39:20","slug":"canvas-grading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/canvas-grading\/","title":{"rendered":"Canvas Grading"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This section describes best practices for grading student work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js is-open sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-first\" data-initially-open=\"true\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"accordion-1\"><h2 id=\"at-16930\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Setting up assessments in Canvas<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16930\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Use the built-in Canvas features to make marking and calculating grades easier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assignments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">The following can be configured in every Canvas assignment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the number of points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how the grade is displayed (i.e. points, percentage, complete \/ incomplete)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether the assignment counts towards the student&#8217;s final grade<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quizzes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every Classic Quiz created is set as a &#8220;Graded Quiz&#8221; by default. This means that instructors must indicate a correct answer for each question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, a &#8220;Graded Survey&#8221; can be used to collect responses which do not need to be marked \u2014&nbsp;anyone who submits will get full credit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Group Weights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Instructors can create different &#8220;groups&#8221; within Assignments to organize student tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A weight can be configured for each group. For example, there can be a &#8220;Midterm&#8221; group worth 25% of the student&#8217;s grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canvas will follow these values to calculate each student&#8217;s final mark accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instructions on how to add group weights, please see here: <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-weight-the-final-course-grade-based-on-assignment\/ta-p\/746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How do I weight the final course grade based on assignment<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-first\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"accordion-2\"><h2 id=\"at-16931\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">SpeedGrader<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16931\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>SpeedGrader allows instructors to view and grade assignment submissions in one place. It makes evaluating assignments quick and easy. NOTE: multiple people <strong>should not <\/strong>grade assignments at the same time, because SpeedGrader <strong>does not<\/strong> automatically update with the latest information for each submission.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Using SpeedGrader, instructors can quickly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>See how many assignments have been graded so far<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See the average score for the class<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cycle through each student&#8217;s work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Annotate student work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add comments and feedback<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rubrics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">For more structured grading, instructors can create rubrics and attach them to assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In SpeedGrader, simply click on the rubric cells and Canvas will automatically sum up the points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note \u2014&nbsp;rubrics cannot sum up points for quizzes, only assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rubric page can be accessed from the left-hand course navigation menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student will have the opportunity to see the rubric marks in their grades page for the assignment.&nbsp; They can see this by clicking the \u201cView Rubric\u201d button for the assignment on the Grades page..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marking assignments using Rubrics must be done in SpeedGrader.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To do so, open SpeedGrader for the relevant assignment and you will see a \u201cView Rubric\u201d button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"499\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2024\/05\/View-Rubric.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1695\" style=\"width:326px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2024\/05\/View-Rubric.png 420w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2024\/05\/View-Rubric-253x300.png 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The rubric will open in the grading pane, however, most often the rubric will not fit in the space provided.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;Tip:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;You can drag the divider (highlighted in green below) between the submission and the grading pane to fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To mark, click in appropriate box.&nbsp; If you wish, you can leave a criteria-specific comment by clicking the speech box icon (circled in purple below).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;Remember:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;You must click the \u201cSave\u201d button below the rubric to save the rubric marks.&nbsp; Instructors can access it by clicking on &#8220;Grades&#8221; in the left-hand course navigation menu. It has three additional viewing modes, which can be changed by clicking on the currently selected mode and choosing a different one from the drop-down list. Not all settings are available in each mode. The modes are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Gradebook&#8221; &#8211; the main viewing page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Learning Mastery&#8221; &#8211; assessment based on Outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Individual View&#8221; &#8211; assessment of individual students on separate assignments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Gradebook History&#8221; &#8211; a log of grade changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of this section is focused on the &#8220;Gradebook&#8221; mode.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Columns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Each column corresponds to an assignment or quiz in the Canvas course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">The order of these columns corresponds to the order seen in &#8220;Assignments&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Search \/ Filter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Use the search bar to search for specific students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To filter students by section, select View &#8211;&gt; Filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grade Directly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content\">Click into a student&#8217;s cell to input a grade directly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click the arrow to expand more options, including (1) the ability to leave comments, (2) mark an assignment as &#8220;Excused&#8221;, and (3) launch SpeedGrader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manual Grade Posting Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c760b689-f798-42db-9122-431d1ff59d42\">Review UBC\u2019s guide on controlling the visibility of grades:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/keepteaching.ubc.ca\/grades\/#visibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/keepteaching.ubc.ca\/grades\/#visibility<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-638e8b78-67c7-44bc-a96d-f93b7b94ae65\">Hide your grades for entire grade centre (Do this prior to entering any grades)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-46643699-bbe4-4603-b45a-ac04380178eb\">If you do not want the grades you enter to be immediately visible to students, we recommend changing your course\u2019s grade posting policy to&nbsp;<strong>Manually Post Grades.&nbsp;<\/strong>You can change the grade posting policy for your course by following these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-680fb81b-2644-4353-86de-e157c02428b8\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2024\/05\/Change-Grade-posting-policy-1024x546.jpeg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Change-Grade-posting-policy-1024x546.jpeg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-127cfdec-fd9c-424a-8274-755c545492dc\">\n<li>In Course Navigation, click the&nbsp;<strong>Grades<\/strong>&nbsp;link.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>Settings&nbsp;<\/strong>(gear)&nbsp;icon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>Grade Posting Policy<\/strong>&nbsp;tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a grade posting policy for your course (<strong>Manually Post Grades<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>Automatically Post Grades<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To apply your changes, click the&nbsp;<strong>Update<\/strong>&nbsp;button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-f76c895e-ab6b-44ed-a774-e0468770e1d8\">* Note that once you changed the Grade Posting Policy this way, all of the columns in your gradebook will switch to&nbsp;<strong>Manually Post Grades.&nbsp;<\/strong>If you have quizzes in which you want students to be able to see their responses or correct answers right after each attempt, then you will need to remain the Grade Posting Policy automatically for those assignments. You can do so by clicking on the three dots next to the column name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Import and Export Grades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Do I Import Grades in the Gradebook?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-b1585be2-a252-4d04-85f1-54c9dcd187b4\">You can use a CSV file to upload changes to the Gradebook. You can upload information for existing assignments, or you can also use a CSV file to create new assignments in the Gradebook. New assignments will automatically be published in your course. If you do not know how to save a file in a CSV format, please check the documentation for the program you are using to create your Gradebook changes (e.g., Excel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c5f4bbcf-97ac-4778-8e18-58dbbbf51ba4\">If you don\u2019t want to create a new CSV file, you can always&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-export-grades-in-the-Gradebook\/ta-p\/809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download the CSV<\/a>&nbsp;from Canvas, change it, and re-upload the same file and the changes you made will appear in Canvas once you re-upload the CSV file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-9c6b7ef0-3295-46e4-b3ee-5753d5d10a60\">If you create a column for a new assignment, Canvas will ask how you want to import the assignment. New assignments upload with the following settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-f813ddde-af07-47e2-b6ce-ae149ae077fb\">\n<li>Assignment Group: Assignments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submission Type: No submission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Due date for: Everyone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-63a42d2d-dac2-47b8-86b7-8accdbea29d7\"><strong>Required columns and order<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-5f07a4db-eea8-4a24-86c5-8cbb7c2a6ae6\">\n<li>Student Name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student ID<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SIS User ID (only required if you use SIS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SIS Login ID (only required if you use SIS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assignment (this can be for an existing assignment or a new assignment; retain IDs for existing assignments)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-d3a0cb69-c955-4388-adf2-c102e4f6a01e\">More information on how to import grades into the Gradebook is available here: <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-import-grades-in-the-Gradebook\/ta-p\/807\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-import-grades-in-the-Gradebook\/ta-p\/807\">https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-import-grades-in-the-Gradebook\/ta-p\/807<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-references\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"accordion-4\"><h2 id=\"at-16933\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Posting Final Grades<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16933\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"sauder-accordion-content sauder-accordion-content-references\">Final grades must be uploaded to the Workday in order to be deemed official.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js sauder-accordion sauder-accordion-first\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"false\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" id=\"grading-best-practices\"><h2 id=\"at-16934\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Grading Best Practices<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16934\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>If a student has been excused from an assignment and approved by the program office<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Best practice in this case is to mark the student assignment as &#8216;excused&#8217; in the Canvas Gradebook. Canvas will average the student&#8217;s other grades and not include the excused graded activity.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-16935\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Marking and Grading with TAs<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16935\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Before marking with TAs it is worth taking a few minutes to explicitly state the aims of the assignment and the importance of the TAs role in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;Consider!<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; Is what you are asking appropriate for an undergraduate student to mark?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Multiple choice, or basic quantitative problem sets are appropriate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Essay questions and case analyses, generally are not appropriate for TAs to mark.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is critical to communicate and calibrate expectations if a TA is marking an assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One way to calibrate is to mark the same assignments together on a video call.&nbsp; (Zoom or otherwise.)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>There are two ways to proceed: You can pick random assignments<\/em><em>, or vetted to provide the TA with an example of a range of work (i.e., an exceptional piece, an acceptable piece, and an unacceptable piece.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another method is to provide marking guidelines and a sample assignment ask the TA(s) to mark a few assignments and submit them for review, then have a discussion.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If you have multiple TAs marking, the discussion is best had over zoom or a conference call to ensure that all of the TAs are aligned.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using&nbsp;rubrics&nbsp;can help keep TAs on track marking with little deviation.&nbsp; In these cases, providing detail in each square is helpful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another strategy is to utilize a canvas feature called Moderated Grading.&nbsp; This allows marks to be entered into SpeedGrader, then be reviewed by a moderator, generally the instructor.&nbsp; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Tip:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;If you don\u2019t want to provide this level of detail to students, give your TA a \u201cmarking copy\u201d to work from that contains the details.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h2 id=\"at-16936\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Anonymous Grading<\/h2><div id=\"ac-16936\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p><strong>Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anonymous grading is a feature that, when enabled, removes any information from Canvas Assignment submissions that could identify a student. This can help mitigate bias while TAs and\/or instructors are grading. Anonymous grading also hides the name of the marker from student view, so students don\u2019t know if the marker is a TA or an instructor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When anonymous grading is enabled in a course, content creators can create assignments with the option to hide student names from graders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;Be Aware!<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Anonymous Grading removes identifiable information from the gradebook and Speedgrader, but not from the assignment itself.&nbsp; If a student includes their name in the assignment then anonymous grading will not help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anonymous Grading can be enabled two ways: in the SpeedGrader (see \u201cOption 1\u201d below) and at assignment creation (see \u201cOption 2\u201c).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 1. This number does not have a limit. However, the page displays a message if there are not enough course users with grading permissions to fulfill the desired number of graders.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A moderator does not have to specify which graders can grade submissions. If a course includes a surplus of graders higher than the desired number of graders, any grader can assess an assignment submission until the specified number of grades has been achieved. When an assignment has reached the specified number of graders, remaining graders will not be able to access the assignment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The moderator is never included in the number of available graders since the moderator does not traditionally grade individual submissions but may provide a custom grade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grader comment visibility<\/strong>\u2014the option that allows graders to view each other\u2019s comments. This option is selected by default.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Final grader<\/strong>\u2014the moderator, or the grader who determines the final grade. The Select Grader menu displays the names of course graders who have been given permission to determine the final grade. This permission is assigned to one or more roles at the account level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Moderated assignments cannot be edited by any grader except the moderator.
