March 20 – How to become an effective scientific mentor and team leader?
Douw Steyn, Prof. Emeritus at Dept. of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences

Prof. Steyn is an Emeritus Professor of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at UBC. He has mentored many scientists and coworkers over the course of his career. Drawing from his extensive experience directing a research group as well as leading multiple international and interdisciplinary research projects, Prof. Steyn will discuss the challenges of managing interpersonal interactions in a research group setting and will share his insights on how to create effective team work dynamics, including motivating others, moderating disputes, and navigating difficult situations.

April 24 – On Becoming an Academic Entrepreneur
Dr. Gail C. Murphy, Prof. of Computer Science, and UBC Vice-President Research & Innovation

Prof. Gail Murphy is a Professor in the Dept. of Computer Science and Vice-President Research and Innovation (R&I) at UBC. She is also a co-founder and Director at Tasktop Technologies Incorporated. In this workshop, she will share lessons learned and key insights from her professional journey that have contributed to her success. In addition, she will touch on examples of jobs within an R&I office at a top tier research institution that require post-grad training.

Nov 20 – Life in Academia: a Search for Meaning
Dr. Sheryl Staub-French, Prof. of Civil Engineering and Director of the BIM TOPiCS Lab.
Description: In this SLAM workshop, Prof. Staub-French will talk about the ups and downs of her life in Academia and the lessons learned from her journey. In particular, she will focus on those lessons learned from starting and leading her own research lab.

Bio: Dr. Staub-French is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. She received her BS in Civil Engineering from Santa Clara University and her MS and PhD from Stanford University. She is Director of the BIM TOPiCS Lab where she leads research focused on understanding and improving best practices for the delivery of sustainable building construction projects through effective and collaborative use of building information modeling (BIM). She is also the Advisor to the Dean of Applied Science on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and leads a targeted recruitment strategy for UBC Engineering that plans to increase the number of women enrolled in its programs to 50% by 2020.
