Discussion
First, review the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These rights apply to everyone on earth! This video presents a background of how they came into being.
Key words for the UNDRIP are:
Discrimination: to treat someone or a group badly because or a real or not real social category such as race, skin colour, sexual orientation etc….
Self-determination: the ability to choose your own actions, instead of someone else choosing them for you.
Self-government: to have an independent government that is not controlled by another government.
Participation: taking part in something, being included
Reflection and Activities
1) Indigenous peoples are not the only group who has faced current or historical discrimination. What other groups of people have faced discrimination? What happened?
2) There are a number of countries in the world that have self-government or autonomous regions within their borders. Where are they? How did these communities come to have self-government?
