The preamble introduces the UNDRIP in good faith. It states that all people have the right to be different and all contribute to human civilization. It condemns doctrines of superiority and states that Indigenous peoples have the right to live without discrimination. There is acknowledgement of historic injustices and of the urgent need to promote cultural rights and rights written in treaties with governments. Indigenous peoples are self-organizing and by having control over their own affairs, they can have a better future. It states the importance of self-determination for Indigenous peoples as well as a working relationship with the state. Indigenous peoples around the world all face unique situations and have unique cultures and need to be treated accordingly.
This is a great UNDRIP introduction video made by the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact.
This is the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous PeoplesĀ not people. This is special. The rights outlined in this document are for the community (collective) and for the individual. This highlights the importance of the collective in the world-view held by Indigenous peoples.
