[Video] Why we experience less and less fulfillment, and how to prevent it

Fulfillment ONLY happens when you do something for someone else. Over 90% of people don’t feel fulfilled at work. And it’s because we don’t help anyone anymore. ~ Simon Sinek

Simon Sinek just keeps delivering great thought provoking and inspirational content:

Trust

A company, community, culture or country is a group of people with a common set of values and beliefs. When we are surrounded by people who believe what we believe, something miraculous happens: trust emerges.

When we trust someone, we are:

–        More willing to take risks

–        Experiment with things we normally won’t

–        Explore with the confidence that those who trust us will be there for us

This is evident when for example, you are in an environment that is unfamiliar to you, and meet someone with similar beliefs:

–        If you are from Vancouver, and go to LA, and find someone from Vancouver, you immediate have a bond with that person, for the sole reason that they share a similar quality: they have lived where you have lived and know what it’s like. If that Vancouverite suggests an attraction in LA, you seriously consider going. But if a random stranger walks up to you and suggested the same attraction, you ignore them.

Symbols & Beliefs

You have to say and do things you actually believe in. This makes you authentic. The things we do are symbols of who you are. And we look for these symbols in others. Your friends likely share some of the same values and beliefs that you do.

Why do people buy Apple products, yet very few of them cover the Apple Logo? Why do people love their iProducts? Because Apple represents an idea that we can relate to. There are plenty of other alternative products that are more affordable. Many iPhone cases even feature the Apple Logo by printing it onto the case.

Have you ever seen a dirty iMac? Comparatively, when do you see someone cleaning their PC laptop?

Fulfillment

80% of people do not work on self-improvement because they think they are “good enough”. For the percentage of people that do, there are a lot of books on self-help: 7 habits of highly effective people, 10 steps to success. We work on ourselves. It’s all about me, myself and I. For those that do focus on self-improvement, ask yourselves “Do you feel fulfilled”?

If we are willing to give to the person next to us, it’s amazing what we can get in return.

Fulfillment ONLY happens when you do something for someone else. Over 90% of people don’t feel fulfilled at work. And it’s because we don’t help anyone anymore. Generosity is doing something for someone without expecting anything in return.

We sit in our cubes, email each other virtually, and do our work, all with little human interaction. Human interaction is a must for fulfillment. When you leave a company, it’s not because you miss the work, it’s because you miss the people.  Why do you say that?

Experiencing fulfillment has nothing to do with the taker, it has everything to do with the giver.

Take-away

What are you doing to help the person next to you? Don’t you want to wake up and go to work for the only reason that you can do something for someone else and feel fulfilled? Wouldn’t you want them to do the same for you?
