“When people believe what you believe, trust emerges” – Simon Sinek
You feel more drawn to people who believe what we believe. Why does this happen? It’s because you feel the emotion of trust. If you look at the friends around you, you’ll realize that your best friends are those that likely share some of the fundamental beliefs that you value.
Simon Sinek’s Inspirational TED talk was the first TED talk I have ever watched. The thing I took away most was to look at the purpose behind what you are doing. Ask yourself “why” often.
When you don’t ask why, and only focus on what you do and how you do it, you can’t derive enjoyment and you eventually lose interest. It’s rooted into our biology. It’s how the brain functions. What most people don’t realize is that the things you call your “interests” are derived (albeit subconsciously sometimes) from why like doing them, and typically, it’s because it gives you some form of positive emotion.
You exercise because you feel better. You get a job because you want to make money which allows you to buy the things you want that makes you happier. It is important to derive meaning from the things we do that take up our day. And when you can’t derive meaning for too many days in a row, that’s when you give up and find something else that has more meaning.
It is important to think and reflect on our lives periodically and ask why. And when the answer isn’t good enough, it’s important to seek to do things that have meaning. Only then can fulfillment emerge.
