Future research & recommendations

The main objective of this project was to identify the spatial relationships of population variables to Vancouver’s sustainability initiatives (in the form of Greenest City projects). Given our previously outlined limitations, our future recommendations revolve around the need for data use and variable changes.

Firstly, as our census data is based in 2016, it would be advisable for further research to replicate this project with updated Statistics Canada data that is anticipated to be released in the next calendar year (Statistics Canada, 2021). This would allow researchers to gain a more recent and accurate level of understanding of our variable populations. Additionally, further studies should consider the inclusion of other missing key variables, to inquire into what other factors are impacting Greenest City project locations. Some potential variables to consider include age (given the youth-oriented construction of climate change sustainability initiatives), gender (including how location impacts particular demographics such as marginalized non-binary populations), and property value (which can provide greater nuance to variables such as income).

As a recommendation for future research, we would also advise those who will replicate or conduct similar analyses to explore options in normalizing data differently from how this project had. Alternative to our analyses which utilized raw numbers, variable data can be normalized by assigning values a percentage between 0 and 100. We argue that this can improve on the ways in which the explanatory variables are compared to one another in the Exploratory Regression Analysis and GWR, which may yield greater detailed results for further analysis. Lastly, future research and expansion of this project has the potential for becoming utilized in sustainability movements and political change. We would recommend upon finalization of this research analysis that such data be available to groups and organizations that have the capacity to use in efforts towards demanding such sustainable projects within the city to take marginalized populations into greater political consideration.
