Netflix Vs. CRTC
Over the past couple of weeks, the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) have been wanting to regulate the online content being broadcasted from companies such as Netflix and Google. The CRTC has demanded Netflix to turn over their Canadian content and their subscriber information to determine if the company require regulatory intervention. Although after a 1999 ruling, the CRTC has a right to collect data from internet broadcasters, Netflix still refuses to turn over their information as they fear that the CRTC will pass along these sensitive informations to their competitions.
I honestly do not see how the CRTC can make such demands to Netflix that does not have any corporate presence in Canada. I understand that Rogers and Bell is currently working on their own version of online broadcasting, Shomi, and I believe that it makes sense that Netflix does not want to hand over their information. I find it interesting that in the article, Rogers and Bell have asked for equal treatment and to have Netflix regulated. The reason that I find this amusing is that Rogers and Bell are some of the largest monopolies in Canada and they are making themselves sound like startup companies.
