Unpaid Internships
An internship is one of the many ways to earn experience in a working environment and is popular among undergraduates as it allows students to earn experience without committing to a job for an extended period of time. By earning real-life experience, employers see this as a benefit and prioritize this when recruiting new employees. It’s hard to find a job these days, even with a bachelor’s degree.
Looking back a few years, having a bachelor’s degree is a point of differentiation and one of the ways to earn a decent job, however that is not the case anymore. I believe that having a bachelor’s degree is not good enough to earn a decent job and that we must settle for internships to earn experience or even have a master’s degree to be considered different from all the other eager unemployed students.
It just seems so hard to find a job that I would settle for an unpaid internship even if it was illegal. Although an internship does not directly lead to a job, it helps to build a stronger resume. Although this may be exploiting young workers, I believe that this is what we need to set ourselves apart from one another, to be unique.
