Today was actually the first day I spent the majority of time doing observations. Rather than sticking to math classes, I started out by following Karen’s timetable and observed different subjects such as socials, science, and health and career education (HCE) for specifically grade 7 classes. I was amazed by the overall respectfulness of the students and the use of technology such as SMART boards that can be seen in every single classroom, and laptops that all the groups have in the classes working on group project. Of course we can never have 100% perfect classroom situation all the time, and today was actually the day I started to see more realistic part of the school. Some students issues did exist (e.g. few students not using their in-class project working period wisely), but that was the perfect time to observe how teachers in St. John’s deal with them. I tried to compare to my long practicum school and compare among different teachers within St. John’s. My impression was that overall St. John’s tends to be more assertive (or maybe I would say strict) and has a clearer system for classroom management, so that there is relatively less grey area. My question is whether there are some general guideline for classroom management that teachers follow?
